Gary Habermas (born 1950) is Professor of Apologetics and Philosophy and chairman of the department of philosophy and theology at Liberty University, and has written many books such as The Case for the Resurrection of Jesus,Did Jesus Rise from the Dead?: The Resurrection Debate,Resurrected?: An Atheist and Theist Dialogue,Did the Resurrection Happen?], etc.He wrote in the Introduction to this 1996 book, “For over twenty years, this incredible event has been the focus of my professional studies… This present volume … can stand alone in producing a crucially significant element in the total case for the resurrection… This book is chiefly an effort to examine the life, death and resurrection of Jesus from a different perspective. It is largely concerned with pre- and nonbiblical evidence for these events. The main body is devoted to a study of sources that date from before, during, and just after the New Testament, including creedal traditions recorded for the first time in the pages of Scripture. These fascinating subjects seem to be too frequently left unexplained.” (Pg. 9-10)He explains, “The real issue is what the data tell us about the Jesus of history. What sources do we have at our disposal? Is there any material from non-Christians” When did Jesus live? What did he do? What did he teach? How did he die? Is there any truth to the New Testament contention that Jesus was raised from the dead? It is our purpose to pursue the answers to many of these questions both by addressing critical challenges and by ascertaining what sources support a traditional understanding of Jesus.” (Pg. 26)He points out, “First, it is simply false to hole that there are no ancient sources outside the New Testament that speak of Jesus. It is true that none of these extrabiblical sources give a DETAILED account concerning Jesus, but there are nevertheless over a dozen non-Christian sources from ancient history that mention him. There are a number of early Christians sources that provide more information concerning him… It may even be the case that he is one of the most-mentioned figures of the ancient world!” (Pg. 66)He continues, “there were very few ancient writers, comparatively speaking… At the beginning, we cannot be sure that Jesus or the earliest Christians made any such international commotion… Lastly, Jesus’ background as a peasant from a humble family would mitigate against him receiving any great amount of attention… we must not be misled by these considerations into the mistaken conclusion that extra-New Testament sources ignore Jesus. There are a surprising number of non-Christian sources that do tell us a number of things about him. There are also several reasons why even more is not reported.” (Pg. 66-67)He notes, “For those who content that the Gospels are dependable sources that reveal a non-divine Jesus and that Paul (and others) perverted this message, it should be mentioned here that even the synoptic Gospels reveal that Jesus claimed deity for himself. For example, he referred to himself as ‘Son of God’ and ‘Son of Man,’ he taught that salvation was found only in himself and claimed that only he had the power to forgive sin. He certainly claimed to be in a privileged relationship with God; his usage of ‘Abba’ (Aramaic for ‘Daddy’) is a very unusual name for God and is an indication of his unique sonship, as many critical scholars admit.” (Pg. 83)He states, “Of course, some may think that the Jewish report of the empty tomb is simply an invention of the early Christians. But such an assertion is question begging.; it merely assumes that has not been proven. Once again, we ask for the evidence for such claims.” (Pg. 128)He lists “At least TWELVE separate facts are considered to be knowable history. (1) Jesus died by crucifixion and (2) was buried. (3) Jesus’ death caused the disciples to despair and lose hope, believing that his life was ended. (4) Although not as widely accepted, many scholars hold that the tomb in which Jesus was buried was discovered to be empty just a few days later. Critical scholars further agree that (5) the disciples had experiences which they believed were literal appearances of the risen Jesus. Because of these experiences, (6) the disciples were transformed from doubters who were afraid to identify themselves with Jesus to bold proclaimers of his death and resurrection. (7) This message was the center of preaching in the early church and (8) was especially proclaimed in Jerusalem, where Jesus died and was buried shortly before. As a result of this preaching, (9) the church was born and grew, (10) with Sunday as the primary day of worship. (11) James, who had been a skeptic, was converted to the faith when he also believed that he saw the resurrected Jesus. (12) A few years later, Paul was converted by an experience which he, likewise, believed to be an appearance of the risen Jesus.” (Pg. 158)He argues, “Since these core historical facts … have been established by critical and historical procedures, contemporary scholars cannot reject the evidence simply by referring to ‘discrepancies’ in the New Testament texts or to its general ‘unreliability.’ Not only are such critical claims refuted by evidence discussed in other chapters, but it has been concluded that the resurrection can be historically demonstrated even when the minimum historical facts are utilized… Neither can it be said that Jesus rose spiritually, but not literally. Again, these and other such views are refuted in that the facts admitted by virtually all scholars as knowable history are adequate to historically demonstrate the literal resurrection of Jesus according to probability.” (Pg. 165-166)Of the recent carbon dating of the Shroud of Turin, he argues, “perhaps most damaging of all to the carbon dating tests, a secret dating of shroud fibers in 1981 differed from the 1988 tests by centuries, and even suggested a date that could, with the plus-minus factor, date the cloth to the first century AD! Last, a few scientists have even remarked that if the shroud image was caused by Jesus’ resurrection, the… scorch could actually have made the cloth appear younger, due to neutron flux. As a result, the 1988 carbon testing appears to be less authoritative than one might originally think. At least it is not a closed case.” (Pg. 182)Of the famous and controversial text in Josephus about Jesus, he comments, “There are good indications that the majority of the text is genuine. There is not textual evidence against it, and, conversely, there is very good manuscript evidence for this statement about Jesus, thus making it difficult to ignore…. This we conclude that there are good reasons for accepting this version of Josephus’ statement about Jesus, with modification of the questionable words.” (Pg. 193)He concludes, “These three major categories of arguments for the resurrection do not exhaust the ancient evidence for this event, but they do demonstrate this fact as a literal event of history, according to normal historical methodology. This event is the final capstone and fitting conclusion for the unique life, person, teachings, and death of Jesus. In the earliest church, the resurrection served the purpose of confirming Jesus Christ’s message and providing the basis for the truth of the Christian message.” (Pg. 254-255)This book is “must reading” for anyone studying the “historical Jesus,” as well as the resurrection.

This book is an excellent treatment of the evidence outside of the bible that reveals a pretty good outline of Jesus' life, actions and how he was thought of by the ancient world. Gary Habermas does a great job of pointing out the facts, while not personally ripping anyone else for their beliefs. Since I am not an historian, but merely a layperson looking for answers, I appreciated the Appendix where he outlines the process of historiography and explains how an historian would look at the evidence. A great read that I have gone through multiple times.

I read this very long time ago. I wasn't raised as Believer. I was raised in an Atheist family. When I came to know Jesus as Lord and Savior, long ago. I just wanted to "know that I know" this Jesus. I read a lot of William Lane Craig and Alvin Plantinga (both are probably the best debater and Philosopher) from my undergrad library. I don't know how I missed this gem. Because I was in my grad school library and I found it. I was supposed to be studying for a final and got bored in the library. I looked at what books they had and found this. I read the whole thing in one sitting back on that day, which was so long ago.Dr. Habermas knows what he is talking about. My little brain soaked it up and actually retained a fair amount of it. I just got it again to re-read and give to a friend.

Though faith shouldn't depend on proving historical facts around the life of Christ it is nice to have a source of information on the subject. The book does repeat and summarize at the end of each chapter and after the main content. Even if any one source is not strong alone together makes a convincing argument for a historical Jesus and Biblical accounts.

Eminently readable; Dr. Habermas sorts the wheat from the chaff in the area of the historicity of Jesus of Nazareth, going through the Gospel accounts and non-biblical histories. Short version: Jesus existed. He was crucified under Pontus Pilate. He was laid in a tomb. He rose from the dead three days later. The evidence Dr. Habermas compiles and lays out is presented clearly, tied in to other sources. Dr. Habermas also presents the history of those who object to the orthodox view and shows why they are wrong; where they failed. Highly recommended!

This is a pretty good overview of the non-biblical sources for the Historical Jesus. The only "bad" thing I guess you could say about it is that some of the material is a little dated (e.g. G.A. Wells isn't a mythicist anymore, and doesn't seem as prominent as he used to be). If you want something that's a little more current, then I highly suggest reading "The Jesus Legend: A Case for the Historical Reliability of the Synoptic Jesus Tradition" (Baker Academic, 2007), by Paul Rhodes Eddy & Gregory A. Boyd.

It you're looking for an objective pile of evident for the existence of Jesus... look no further. Habermas brings an incredible amount of research to be easily accessible to us. I recommend Habermas to many people

My husband and I read this book in order to address questions from a friend of ours about how much of the New Testament can be trusted to be Jesus’ words and teachings. This was VERY helpful and provides a solid foundation for what the Holy Spirit has already confirmed in our lives.

My best friend Jen was with me when I opened up Rebekah Peppler’s Aperitif book. We both oohed and ahhed over the gorgeous photos of the food and drink. We’ve already made plans to host an Aperitif party where everyone has to make a drink and an appetizer from the book. The author comes across as your super-beautiful, super-smart AND funny friend who knows a lot about how the French fill their time before dinner with awesome drinks and snacks. Parts of the book made me laugh out loud. Peppler recommended Shots de Sherry as a drink “best drunk with just deux, when you’re straddling both the winter/spring line and maybe someone sexy.” So clever, with a slightly naughty twist. Even the Table of Contents with its unpretentious and incredibly helpful titles delighted me. The book is divided into what to make depending on the temperature from “Warm: drinks for when the weather is just right” to “Cold: when it’s too damn cold out chapter.” Since I live in the Frozen Tundra of Wisconsin, I will pay a lot of attention to the offerings for less than temperate conditions and picture myself amidst friends, sitting on the banks of the Seine with drink and snack in hand.

Remember that feeling when you read Kerouacs On The Road in high school and then immediately wanted to run off on a cross country trip and never look back?? Well, this book gave me that same urgency, but this time it was to my local liquor store to stock up on vermouth and Lillet. If you cant up and move to Paris - like this author did - seriously, the next best thing is getting to read this book. I havent gotten a chance to make any of the recipes yet (although I DID make a Lillet Rouge and Tonic last night and it was delicious!), but I love her intros to each - her writing is so sincere, witty, insightful. I like her observations of the French culture that only a non-French person would ever be able to articulate. The images are gorgeous too - energetic, natural and lifestyle-y. Can't wait to dig deeper into this sweet little book.

Upon receiving Apéritif I knew immediately that I was in for a treat. I initially noticed how lovely the photos are, they completely evoke the French and Parisian spirit us Americans fawn over (and for good reason). But what sells the whole book is Peppler's bright and funny writing! I sat reading this book for a while before jumping into it and trying an apéritif (prior to stocking my bar the only relevant tools I had were some Aperol and prosecco). With each drink comes some bright and effervescent commentary along with easy to follow instructions. I haven't explored the food as thoroughly but I can't wait to try them out at my weekly gathering with friends.Included in the beginning is a history of the individual apéritifs that I found interesting. If you're concerned you won't be able to find some of these, she also provides online sources and alternatives. I live in a small city, emphasis on small, and I had no trouble finding what I wanted. But Peppler encourages experimentation. Apéritif isn't about following the recipes to a T - It's also about evoking a feeling - alone or with friends - that I would consider soothing and peaceful. In the short amount of time I've had it, this book has brought me joy and I highly recommend it. Rebekah Peppler, if you're reading this: Brava!

Aperitif is an adorable size and the gold foil on the cover makes it an ideal holiday gift for your favorite happy hour partner, coworker, Fun Aunt/Uncle -- you get the idea. There's a ton of recipes packed into this little book, sprinkled with sweet & inspiring photos. My favorite section may be the Aperitif Shots -- which both surprised me and made me want to throw a party immediately. I'm looking forward to turning again and again to this book during the busy social season ahead.

Gorgeous book from cover to cover. Rich in every single detail. I can’t wait to explore each recipe and the stories behind Rebekah’s craft and talent. Time to get fancy (and a tad tispy), Parisian style! Cheers.

A bit too specialised. It is very difficult to find these aperitives in our market

This book a perfect.

A perfect gift (if you can bear to give it away) for the foodie and drink-lover in your life! Charming, well- researched and full of essential apéro recipes!
