About the Author
Linda Griffiths is an actress, producer, and writer. Griffiths is a founding member of 25th Street Theatre in Saskatoon. Griffiths's first major success came when she and Paul Thompson collaborated to write Maggie and Pierre, a one-person, three-character play that bases its narrative structure on events in Pierre and Margaret Trudeau's life together. Griffiths has also written O.D. in Paradise, Jessica (with Maria Campbell, The Darling Family, Brother André's Heart, and The Duchess. Between 1986 and 1988, Griffiths was co-artistic director of Theatre Passe Muraille, along with Layne Coleman and Clarke Rogers. Griffiths has received many awards for her contributions to the theatre world. She has won five Dora Mavor Moore awards, including wins for Maggie and Pierre, O.D. in Paradise, Jessica ), and Alien Creature; a Gemini award; two Chalmers Canadian Play Awards for Jessica and Alien Creature; and a Quizanne International Festival award for Jessica . She has twice been nominated for the Governor General's Literary Award. In addition to her plays, Griffiths writes fiction and poetry.

It is a shambles of a book, and deeply fascinating, showing the conflict zone between two cultures as it rages internally in Linda Griffiths and especially in Maria Campbell. The two wrote a play about Maria's life (loosely based on her book, _Halfbreed_) as a metis, that is, of mixed Indian and European descent. Half the book is the chronicle of their struggle writing the play, and the other half is the play itself. Although I expected the chronicle part would be dull, it is not that at all, and it makes the play much more interesting. Unicorns mix with Native spirits, the past conflicts with the present, and the personal is as ever the political. The struggle exposes the culture; I understood much more about white society and myself. The tension between the two cultures is also the same zone where a lot of our internal contradictions exist, which is the source of much of our anxieties here in North America. This is a wild, sometimes funny book, that brings healing and understanding.
