In a Barn in New England, Joseph Monniger recounts his family's first year living in and completing renovations of a large barn in Warren, New Hampshire. In addition to details of the renovation, Monniger also paints a picture of the simple things in life that too many today are too hurried and too harried to notice, much less enjoy, whether it's flying a kite with an eight-year-old in a summer meadow, entertaining family and friends at Thanksgiving dinner or stopping for a moment while painting a wall to notice the moon's reflection in the dog's water bowl. The book also calls to our attention the worrisome fact that approximately 1,000 barns disappear from the North American landscape each year.

Lovely, Lovely, book. I could not put it down and looked forward to my nightly reading. In some parts it strayed off from the actual life in the barn what those parts were okay to read about.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it. He does a good job describing the adventures of living in a converted barn.

Monninger has a very engaging way of writing and this book like his others is compelling to read to see what happens next. My favorite book of his is Eternal on the Water.

I love everything he writes!

It's a wonderful book, well written and makes you feel good about life! I will now buy more books from this author.

This book documents the first year of living as a family for Monninger, his partner, and his partner's son. The book begins with the first day Monninger and his partner went to look at the barn that would become their home together and follows them for one year as they establish their new life as one family in their home in the barn. Monninger describes how each person adapted to living in the 6000 square foot living area inside the barn, how they remodeled some rooms, added heating stoves, and rebuilt the kitchen. It tells how they melded their furniture together, choosing one person's or another's best pieces, and purchased some new items specifically for the new space. After a summer of settling in, the barn finally began to make the transition into feeling like a home when extended family came to visit for the holidays.The title and cover photo of the book may be a little misleading- -this is definitely not a barn story. Although Monninger relates in passing some of the history of the barn, this isn't an ode to country traditions or barn lore. It is much more a story of a family, of taking unrelated individuals, each with prior lives involving other relationships, and constructing a new unity together. Monninger describes how he and his partner are quite satisfied to construct their family without a marriage ceremony. He also tells us how close he feels to his partner's son, and how much this relationship means to him. In reading Monninger's story however, I can't help but wonder if the young boy is as contented with his parents' unmarried state as they are. How secure can he feel in his relationship with his would-be stepfather if his mother and this man are unwilling to formalize their commitment? It may be perfectly acceptable for two adults to freely establish a home together without the benefit of marriage, but when children are involved, the story becomes much more complicated, and their interests should be seen to first. Monninger is a gifted writer and tells a magical story of intentional family creation in this book, but it's not clear from this tale that he has fully taken responsibility for all he has set in motion.

I bought this book several years ago from the bookstore at Winterthur Gardens and Galleries, the Du Pont estate, in Wilmington, Delaware. I have read, and re-read, this book more times than I care to remember, which is more than I can say for some of the best-selling gardening or nature books in my library.Some people write about nature with authority, some with wonder, and others still with love. Monninger does all this and more. His tone is reminscent of Wordsworth who was detached observer of nature and smitten lover all at once. Contrast Wordsworth with Shelley's awe-struck and hushed ruminations on nature, and you will know at once what I mean and, perhaps, better identify Monninger's unique voice as a nature writer.But this is more than a book about nature outside us. It is also about the ecology of relationships - between a man and his dog, a man and his wife, and a man and his son, and, not least, about their collective relationships with one another as they settle into their lovely home, a barn, in New Hampshire. The self-help books are full of techniques about making marriages and child-rearing work. I couldn't help thinking, after reading this book, that perhaps the secret of a rich and stable family life is really quite simple: one needs two things: a shared vision of the life the family wants and then the shared burden of working towards it. So, even when there are nice paychecks, a handsome roof overhead, and a kitchen bursting with all the bounties of food, a family can still fail, except not really. Families do not fail. They just stop trying to work together. When I need to reawaken to this simple, yet profound truth, I read Monninger again and invariably, I am rewarded with a new raft of insights on love, family and nature.

Jackie MacMullan has been a likable and well-respected sportswriter for many years, and considering her unique closeness to the NBA (and Boston sports in particular), I anticipated that this would be a definitive work on the often-celebrated Bird/Magic dynamic - a magnum opus if you will. Instead, I found it a fairly disorganized and pedestrian rehash of the same information that we already knew. I mean, it wasn't bad...it was very readable, but I can't think of anything that really distinguished it from the other basketball books I've read. At the end of the day, I don't think it's that the information or research was bad, it's really the lack of an elegant or entertaining writing style that limited this book. In contrast, Dan Shaughnessy's brand of cynical humor and storytelling is what made his first "Curse of the Bambino" such an entertaining read (as opposed to his follow-up "Reversing the Curse", in my opinion. The writing style is what makes the sports book - not the information. Perhaps that is why writing this type of book must be a great challenge for somebody like MacMullan - her likability is part of her identity (and brand), and that can be constraining when writing about people who engage you on that basis. Shaughnessy obviously does not operate within those constraints...

Plowed brought this book in a weekend. So many memories, passages to highlight, instances where I could remember exactly where I was. The book essentially covers 1979-2009. My life 1976-current day. So pretty fascinating to relive, and unique to me, the Pacers years w Bird the coach and executive. While the players rivalry in the 80s will highlight any Celtics or Laker fan experience, for this Pacer fan 1997-2005 were some of the best years of my life.Chapter 9 is incredibly moving covering Magic’s HIV announcement in 1991. As a 15 year old that didn’t like the Lakers, I really didn’t get the magnitude. The author captures this period vividly,in amazing detail, with remarkable behind the scenes accounts. Golly, I read that Chapter while walking on a treadmill at the gym, and had the damnedest time fighting back the tears.

Book definitely not an airball. Delivers and is not just an outsiders view. It's straight from the mouths of two of the greatest ever and the men who played against them. I don't know of any two other athletes that brought out the best in each other like Magic and Bird did. And it should be a blueprint on how the great ones should respect and treat each other: try to beat each other's brains out on the court, respect and emulate character off the court.

Really I had only modest expectations when I purchased this book as one of the Kindle daily deals. I've read many sports books on topics that are forced. Bird and Magic together? I really had no idea that they were so close. I learned through this book that their bond is legitimate and that made for a great book. The author was excellent and kept the story going. If you are like me and remember the NCAA championship battle between the two and the ensuing NBA finals meetings then I guarantee you will enjoy this book.

"When The Game Was Ours" provides an intimate look into the evolution of the relationship between Larry Bird and Earvin "Magic" Johnson. The book does a great job telling the story of how two men became bitter rivals and eventually close friends. I was relatively young when both men began their careers and wasn't privy to the impact they had on the NBA as a whole, so I especially enjoyed learning about the history of the NBA and how these two men changed it forever. The book is a very easy read and manages to balance the historical aspect with additional insights into both Bird and Magic's relationships with their teammates as well. Unfortunately the latter gets a bit too gossip column for me, and detracts from the overall quality of the book. My only other complaint would be the amount of missing time the book has, for example, while the book does go into detail about Magic's Hall of Fame induction ceremony, it leaves out Larry's entirely. All in all I really enjoyed the book and recommend it for fans of either man, their teams, or the NBA in general.

I love basketball and love Bird and Magic specifically. This book does a great job of telling the story about the NBA as a whole but through the lens of two of the men that elevated the game to new heights. It's an excellent read for anyone that loves basketball.

Fun read. I would suggest this book to anyone that is a fan of the NBA and its history, a fan of either of the title superstars, or anyone that enjoys biogrpahies.The stories and careers are woven together seamlessly and are entertaining. The Boston author does a fair job of representing each athlete equally and there is no detectable "East Coast Bias"Fun book that explores the careers of each athlete and offers insights into how they helped grow the game and how their legends' grew along side one another- how they were rivals and friends at the same time.

Excellent book, good stories about Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. I learned things about them both, that I simply didn't know. At the time this story was happening I lived in Indiana and was following Larry Bird at Indiana State. I loved the small school story, being from Indiana, it hit home. I was raised in a small town called Fortville, "Fortville Demons", this would be in the 50's, the population was about 2000, counting the cats & dogs. So, for me it was a great book, ending in the State Championship. Fun to read!

Wow! Bri and Raphael's story was so emotional! They had an instant attraction that grew into true love! I loved how he was a protector and only wanted the best for her even to the point of thinking he was no good for her because of what happened 4 years before! I loved how she was so giving and caring, only seeing The good in people and willing to forgive their shortcomings! The romance was electrifying, the love making was off the charts. That headboard whew!!! I really enjoyed how he dealt with the IRS situation and Phillip who was clearly warped in the head. I loved the appearance of DeAndre and I anticipate a good story for him in the future along with the rest of the Valentine clan! Dean's story will be lit I'm sure! Stephanie you have brought to life these characters with every story! I feel like I know them personally and I look forward to many more great romance novels in the future from you. You are truly one of my favorite authors and I am glad I stumbled upon you in my Kindle Unlimited library. Thank you!

This book here was a flight through love, seduction, friendship, and grief. I cried, laughed, and clutched my pearls. Most importantly , I cheered for love to win. The writing leaves you filled with emotion. Give yourself permission to experience this very soul stirring trek to love!

Stephanie has quickly become one of my favorite writers in the game and "With Your Permisson" is another reason why. The love story of Bri St. James and Raphael Valentine is journey through forgiveness, finding the strength to let go , and finding the strength to give into love. Its not just the story line or the smoldering sex scenes, its Stephanie' s word choices and her phrasing that make her ane excellent writer and story teller. This book is absolutely one of my favorites in the series and I can't wait until the next book drops! Until then I will become reacquainted with Raphael Valentine again.

I didn't expect to love Bri and Raphael story and much as I do . In fact , on the author's fb team I was one of the few that was rooting for the release of the next couple in line . Anyway is not because I not compassionate about the grief and despair in losing a loving one . It was I love for the heat and energy this author bring to the table and I taught with characteristics of Raphael and would enduring too much melancholy.When in fact I was given this well developed fact journey to happiness. Yes , Raphael is grieving the lost of his love and survival guilt . However the author showed us a full circle understanding of how a new love became possible as his road to recovery through his new attraction to Bri help in inspiring him in wanting more and that now is not the end .I absolutely love it and I can't wait to read what next from this author.Thank you Stephanie Nicole Norris for you hard work and dedication and with God's help giving you the muse in producing these phenomenal reads . First it you haven't read any of Stephanie books shame on you. Second Raphael has pasted Hunter and is now my favorite Valentine brother.. just OMG..I loved how Bri was everything Raphael need and how everything was just right with them... I love how with Stephanie books you can just feel the emotions the characters are going thorough and how the men treat there women and will fight for and do anything to make sure they are happy.. Farah Pandith is a diplomatic entrepreneur, foreign policy strategist, and former diplomat. A world-leading expert and pioneer in countering violent extremism, she is a frequent media commentator and public speaker. She served as a political appointee under Presidents George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama, and she was the first-ever Special Representative to Muslim Communities, serving both Secretaries Hillary Clinton and John Kerry. Under President George W. Bush, Pandith was the director for Middle East Regional Initiatives at the National Security Council and the chief of staff at the United States Agency for International Development’s Bureau for Asia and the Near East. She has also served on the Homeland Security Advisory Council, chairing its task force on countering violent extremism. She is a senior fellow at Harvard University’s John F. If you want to know the tactics of the political left, you must read this book! Read it carefully, and once you understand it, you will know how to break it. The left uses theses tactics everyday, particularly in the media. If you understand their rules you will be less likely to fall into their traps and better able to defeat them in conversation, in communication, in appearance, in reputation, in policy, and frankly in life. For years, the radical left considered Saul Alinsky a soulmate. This book, published in 1971 just a year before he died, is still alternately admired or vilified by many across the political spectrum as the definitive playbook for aspiring political radicals who wish to organize opposition and engage in mass action. Alinsky himself is commonly considered a radical leftist, and his detractors consider him and many of the principles outlined in his book as unethical or hypocritical. However, the truth behind these now commonly accepted generalizations is a bit more nuanced.First of all, Alinsky himself seems clear from the outset that he does not advocate for any particular ideology, and in fact says that he detests and fears dogma. And truly, the precepts outlined in this book could be used by almost any movement that believes it can put “people power” to work. These are not just rules for “radicals” as the title suggests. In fact, the passage of time has rendered this title almost obsolete, as the very term “radical” no longer means what it once did. One only needs to read Alinsky to see how different it has become over the last 50 years. It is truly a propaganda victory for radicals that most seem to consider anything good for the masses as an inherently “radical” cause.When compared to the schemes, misinformation, and antics of today’s better known political figures, Alinsky reads like a veritable patriot in many places. When compared with many of today’s most prominent activists, he can sometimes sound almost like a voice of reason. Much of the book is given over to the central issues of effective human communication and organizing. In these respects, it is eminently rational. Consider the following from the Preface:“…there are certain central concepts of action in human politics that operate regardless of the scene or the time…[that] …make the difference between being a realistic radical and being a rhetorical one who uses the tired old words and slogans, calls the police “pig” or “white fascist racist” or “motherf$%er.”…“Even the most elementary grasp of the fundamental idea that one communicates within the experience of his audience—and gives full respect to the other’s values—would have ruled out attacks on the American flag. The responsible organizer would have known that it is the establishment that has betrayed the flag while the flag, itself, remains the glorious symbol of America’s hopes and aspirations…”Most of Alinsky’s detractors label him a moral relativist and claim he is unethical probably because of his position that the ends can always justify the means. In his own words: "This grasp of the duality of all phenomena is vital in our understanding politics. It frees one from the myth that one approach is positive and another negative. There is no such thing in life. One man's positive is another man's negative. The description of any procedure as "positive" or "negative" is the mark of a political illiterate." Chapter 2, “Of Means and Ends” gets into this issue in exquisite detail. Here Alinsky has included as illustrative of his views an interesting narrative about Mahatma Gandhi, and although some readers will not agree and may label it “rationalization,” it is a very realistic and persuasive discussion.Chapter 5, “Communication,” contains some of the most important ideas in the book. One of the most important principles (alluded to above) is that “people only understand things in terms of their experience. When you can’t find the point in the others experience at which he can receive and understand, you must create the experience for him.”In Chapter 7, “Tactics,” the reader will find the actual list of “rules” that the title alludes to. Strangely, I doubt that most readers will find these rules particularly controversial or immoral.It is hard to tell whether Chapter 8, “The Genesis of Tactic Proxy,” is wrong or is merely poorly stated. Alinsky seems to suggest that all tactics are “accidental” or “response to reaction,” i.e., unplanned. What he may want to convey is the idea that some scenarios play out in unexpected ways, and one must take an opportunistic approach when a good moment presents itself.In the final chapter, “The Way Ahead,” Alinsky makes an interesting observation that seems eerily relevant to the 2016 election cycle. He opines that even if all low income parts of the population were organized, they would still not be powerful enough to drive significant, basic, needed changes, and that they would need allies. He believes organizing the lower middle class is the obvious answer. He goes on to describe what he sees as their typical values (and it is somewhat depressing to realize how little has changed in the time since this was written). These are the so-called “deplorables” that were left behind and ended up swinging the 2016 election.Regardless of political tendencies and what one may have read or heard about Saul Alinsky, this book is worth a read provided that it is read with a critical eye and a challenging attitude. It helps critical readers understand the tactics being deployed in the political arena, and also give them an interesting historical perspective on how much or little things have changed in the last 50 years.

This is a very important work for anyone who's truly interested in "human behavior"and human psychology on many levels, and especially how most people, no matter who they are, can be manipulated. Much of what Alinsky has here has been known for hundreds if not thousands of years, but he organizes his data clearly and makes it very easy to grasp. He was a real "communicator" and probably an outstanding teacher. What he writes is readily recognizable as being implemented with real expertise by U.S. (and E.U.) controlling power groups to an astonishing, and vividly apparent, degree. Vital to know and sadly depressing.

I only wish that I would have read this book many years ago. The truth that every white man needs to know and understand because you are the target, you are being provoked at every possible opportunity and you are under a microscope. They are just waiting for your reaction. "Taking a knee" is a great example of what this book is all about. "Hope and Change" really means "divide and conquer". Now I understand why race relations have never improved.
