Daniel Shiffman is an Assistant Arts Professor in the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. Originally from Baltimore, Daniel received a bachelor of arts in mathematics and philosophy from Yale University and his master's degree from ITP. The Nature of Code teaches how to simulate natural systems using the Processing program language. Processing is a programming language has built in functionality for simulating natural events, and the language is similar to Java.Beginning chapters are focused on physics and calculus. There were some of the best explanations I have ever seen for showing the concepts and how formulas work. I was thinking how much better it would have been if I had learned calculus from a book like this. There are excellent details how forces, vectors, and angles work. Working examples are implemented in using Processing.The middle of the book tells you which libraries are useful. The author takes the time to explain which parts you want to implement your self and when you should rely on a given library.Later parts of the book go into more advanced natural systems such as simulating biological events. Some genetic algorithms are presented, and lastly the building blocks of neural networks are examined. Descriptions are geared towards beginners and the walk through is quite detailed.This book works whether you want to learn programming or simulate natural events. Examples are shown from a beginner's perspective in a way that leads the reader to clearer understanding.

This is a gentle introduction to the Processing language geared mostly towards beginners/artists who wish to explore writing Processing sketches to simulate the natural world. If you are an experienced programmer in a Java or C++ like programming language you will breeze through it very quickly. However, unlike most other programming books geared towards the beginner this one introduces the reader to more advanced topics like vector math, physics, rudimentary AI, and particle systems in a very accessible way while also introducing more and more features of the language itself. Each chapter builds on the one before it. Obviously, it's not going to be a really deep dive into any of these topics but I feel that Mr. Shiffman overwhelmingly succeeded in presenting the fundamentals of several advanced topics in a very accessible way.

I took the Nature of Code class as a master candidate at NYU ITP back in the Spring of 2012 with Dan Shiffman. Went through pretty much all of the material in this book as it iteratively evolved. This final product is amazing. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in motion/physics/programmable art/games/etc. Dan is a great teacher, and this book is definitively reflective of his ability to communicate the concepts behind the Processing language in a simple and intuitive manner ... with a good bit of personality mixed in as well. There are wonderful illustrations and tons of supplementary materials online to make this book even better. It is also pink ... and that is awesome. Overall, you really can't go wrong with this book and it should be on the bookshelf of artists/designers/and coders of all kinds!

I teach high school physics, and have always tried to incorporate a bit of programming into class - solving physics problems and writing code are similar ways of thinking. I came to Processing via the Arduino board while doing "physical computing" with my AP students. Students with no programming experience found Arduino and Processing more accessible than previous classes had found BASIC or VPython, and students with a bit of computing background like Processing's similarity to Java, so it's a language I think I'll stay with for a while for a beginners' class.The book is exactly the sort of thing I was looking for; a framework for coding simple simulations in physics, so that students could see the power of physics as the "engine" behind how things move. They aren't flashy or 3d, but that keeps them simple enough for beginners to grasp, and keeps the focus on the basic principles. Shiffman's writing is clear and to the point, and he goes beyond the traditional physics topics to incorporate cellular automata and neural networks to keep things interesting. I only use a few of the examples with my students, as the book is easily long enough to be a text for a whole course. All physics teacher with an interest in coding should have this on their shelves, where the students can and see leaf through it. Very well done.

I've been using Shiffman's "Learning Processing" book at the text for an intro programming course...a course aimed at computer science and software engineering majors, with a goal of learning Java. Processing has proven to be an enticing way to introduce and gradually make the transition into Java. "Learning Processing" has proven to be a great way to teach it.Now, Shiffman's "The Nature of Code" takes the material to the next level, with intelligent and well-organized coverage of in-depth topics such as vectors, fractals, and cellular automata. I would not recommend beginning programming with this book (though it could be done by a dedicated learner). Rather, I think it helps to be familiar with programming in Processing, and to at least feel comfortable around mathematics. Don't get me wrong...you don't have to be a math whiz to appreciate this book, but Shiffman does not shy away from presenting the necessary mathematics to really help the reader "get" the programming concepts. This could easily become the text for a follow-up to the course I've been teaching.One additional note: it's worth finding Shiffman's website for this book, so that you get a better appreciation for how he went about publishing it and releasing it. He deserves a lot of credit for approaching it the way he did.If someone asks me for a Processing book recommendation, I have typically recommend Shiffman's "Learning Processing". Now, I have a pair of books to recommend...his Processing books are easily my favorite!

Very, very, very informative. Helpful.

I retired this year and picked up a new hobby--painting. Unfortunately, I live in a very rural area and can find no classes close by so I ordered this book. Oh my!!! Claire Watson Garcia's book is totally amazing. She is not only a very gifted artist, but she is a gifted teacher, too, and that's extremely important when writing a "how to" book. It covers EVERYTHING a beginner needs to know, especially how to mix the paints to get the correct consistencies and colors, and it just gets better from there. There is a chapter clearly explaining every aspect of what an artist (not just a beginner) needs to know, common mistakes beginners often make, and how to fix all those mistakes. All the chapters feature numerous paintings by beginners showing initial paintings and then explanations of how to fix problems. I have checked out many books from the library and bought many others, but this book covers everything so much better and infinitely more clearly. I have started reading so many books and become frustrated halfway through the exercises because I didn't know what to do to fix the problems, but this book is working for me. In my opinion, this book is the closest thing I can get to actually sitting in a class. It's for absolute beginners, but I'd be willing to bet people who are past the very beginning stages would love this book, too. You can't go wrong with this book. I LOVE it!

I want to attempt a comparative review of six instructional books for the beginning painter, which I will eventually rank. Before I go into this, here are a few words about where I'm coming from. Needless to say, if your background and expectations are different from mine, you may well arrive at a completely different evaluation of these books.I am relatively new to painting, but had some drawing skills already. I was looking for a book that starts at the very beginning (what supplies to buy etc.) and then introduces me to a range of techniques for painting in realistic style. More specifically, I would like to see the following in my ideal book:(a) Reasonably specific step-by-step instructions that don't leave me guessing how the author got from A to B; at the same time, I would like to be treated as an adult and have clear explanations of why I'm doing what I'm doing throughout;(b) exposure to a variety of techniques such as painting in layers, alla prima;(c) demonstration artwork in realistic style that inspires me to learn what is needed to get there.One more general remark: four of the books I'm reviewing here work with oils and two with acrylics, please keep this in mind if you have already decided on what your favorite paint is. I'll note this below. (I used both oils and acrylics at an early stage and would actually recommend this approach.)(1) Still Life Painting Atelier: An Introduction to Oil Painting (oil): For me, this is head and shoulders above the rest. It succeeds in all three criteria (perhaps the author's artwork is not the most stunning I've ever seen). I'll give it a clear A.(2) Painting for the Absolute and Utter Beginner (this book, acrylics): Pretty good in my opinion, with many useful little tips in it, though sometimes it could be a bit more specific (rather than "work on the shapes, refine the colors") and it wasn't always clear to me why the author made the choices she made (why glaze here, use opaque color there?). I'll call it a B+.(3) Painting in Acrylics: The Indispensable Guide (acrylics): This is actually an excellent book, just a bit different from what I described above. It works great as a reference book (and as a coffee table book, fantastic artwork in it). I won't grade this one.(4) Lessons in Classical Painting: Essential Techniques from Inside the Atelier (oil): A pleasure to read and look at, and similar in approach to Friel's book actually in the instructional parts, but it has a rather different feel to it, much chattier and philosophical and light on the actual hands-on instruction. That's a B for me.(5) Oil Painting Secrets From a Master (oil): Sorry, but advice such as (random example, the book is full of this) "it's not how to paint what you see, but how to see what you paint" doesn't do it for me. Also, much of Leffel's work (the "master" from the title of the book) is too loosely painted for my taste. I'll give it a C-.(6) The Oil Painting Course You've Always Wanted: Guided Lessons for Beginners and Experienced Artists (oil): This seems to be a popular book, but I honestly can't understand why. The instructions are unmotivated and too vague, and the author is an abstract painter whose attempts at realistic demonstration painting in the book are unconvincing (especially the portraits). Some useful information, for example on color mixing, but the book just didn't work for me at all as a course. I'll give it a D.By the way, the drawmixpaint videos on youtube are another wonderful resource, in my opinion.

This is the companion "painting" book to Claire's similarly-named book about "drawing". (I previously reviewed that on Amazon.). This painting book was even more helpful to me than it's wonderful companion. Let me explain why from my perspective.For a beginner (me, at least), painting is much harder to learn than drawing. The same challenges of drawing remain, such as shape accuracy, volume, texture and perspective. But painting requires the additional need for color visualization, paint-mixing skills and brushwork in order to creat, among other things, a proper "value structure". That should meld appropriate colors and spatial illusion to make a painting, not only cohesive, but also able to "pop" off the canvas to suit the artist's intention.Claire's 160-page painting book is extremely well-organized. It proceeds from materials selection to paint-mixing (for both hue and consistency) to brush-handling. Then she combines these and other elements in very-lucid step-by-step lessons for still-lifes, nudes and portraits. (No landscapes.) Throughout, the volume is filled with charts, photos and pictures that make her "plain-English" text readily understandable - andApplicabl

I have been painting for a few years, self taught. I decided prior to taking classes I would read some beginner books to learn the terminology and techniques. The book exceeded my expectations and is something I highly recommend to all of my friends or any artist looking for clarification or guidance.

For those of us who can't just sit down and start painting, it is a wonderful book to explainthe process and the many options available without having to reinvent the wheel. The student paintings are extremely well done and lets me be encouraged !

I added this book to my library as I am still pretty new to painting. I can see some useful information but one very useful bit of information would be for it to be clearer that the book focuses on acrylic painting. Nowhere on the book or in the description did I find that information and my search was for books on watercolor. My nephew uses acrylics so he will get some use out of it, too. I would suggest that they make it clearer so that others won't make the same mistake I did.

This was another Christmas Present to myself, and it is SO great!!! I can't believe how much I've learned, and I'm only 1/4 of the way through it.

I found this book to be thoughtfully laid out, relevant and full of up-to-date information and research. As a Registered Dietitian, I am constantly searching for resources I trust to recommend to my clients. This book is a fantastic resource for not only those struggling to conceive, but for those trying to conceive and/or thinking about starting a family in the near future. I highly recommend!

This is well written book, it’s a quick read packed with the most up to date, evidence based and practical information. The author gives great tips to the readers who are interested in knowing how diet and lifestyle can improve sperm health and increase chances of conception. This book will be beneficial regardless if the couple wants to try “naturally” or with the help of modern technologies. I highly recommend this book.

While there are many books available for women on pre-conception nutrition, there was little to be found for men before this book. Lauren has done an excellent job at summarizing the current available research and distilling the data into easy-to-follow recommendations, including specific information depending on the situation (low motility, low sperm count, general pre-conception nutrition tips, etc.) This book would make an excellent gift for the dad to be, or the woman who loves him (and feeds him!)Lauren is a true expert when it comes to fertility nutrition, and this is an extremely valuable book to add to my recommendations for fertility clients!Note: I received an advanced copy of this book for review.

I was really impressed with the number of research articles cited in this book; well over 100. It's solidly grounded in research science and the author's clinical experience. Which, based on the books and blog posts I've read on fertility nutrition, is incredibly uncommon. It was also refreshing to see a focus on male fertility. Fueling Male Fertility fills the gap in nutrition information for people who are trying to conceive by diving into what men can do to improve their fertility. It takes two to tango, after all. A highlight of the book was the closing section with targeted recommendations for different male infertility diagnoses. Can't recommend this book enough!
