I bough this as a gift for my daughter and she loves it. She has used it to find several places to visit in and around Philly that we'd never have heard about except for this book. Kudos to the author for recognizing a real need in this area.

Good book with lots of ideas. I live in Philly and have done or seen the majority of suggestions so I recommend it for both tourists and Philadelphians who have forgotten what a great place we live in!

I can't imagine this was written by someone who explores Philadelphia much - way too many generic things, and it misses most of the really cool stuff.

The book was Xmas present for my son! He really liked the book since he lives in Philly!!

Happy thanksgiving day

This is the first story I’ve read concerning the struggle of Israel’s quest for independence and I’m glad I read it.Ruth Gruber does an excellent job chronicling the life of Raquela Levy. As young woman, she tried to determine what her calling in life would be. When she realized her gift was being a midwife, she plunged herself into the work as she would with all her coming adventures.The parts that intrigued me the most were the battles the Jews were having not with the Arabs or Muslims, but the occupiers-Britain. They were not benevolent rulers as history has attempted to paint them in the 20th Century. They were hard, calloused and unconcerned with the plight of the Jews in Palestine.Even with the end of WWII and the finding of the concentration camps, you would think the British would be a little more understanding to the plight of the Jews. Not happening. They spent countless time and money ensuring no Jewish male was armed in order to keep order with their Arab neighbors even though they were being attacked. The restrictions on DP’s from Germany was just as appalling. Many of the people were survivors of the concentration camps and instead of breathing the air of freedom, they were placed in camps in Palestine and Cyprus that were replicas of the death camps they had endured. Absolutely appalling!Through all of this, Raquela would serve in each camp and continue to assist in bringing new life into a country they hoped one day would form- the promised land.A great story of love, passion and hope.An excellent companion to, “My Mother’s Ring.”Five Stars

Ruth Gruber wanted to tell the story of the nation of Israel. To do so she wanted to find a true 'woman of Israel'. She found Raquela, who was a 9th generation Israeli. Beginning in the 1940s Raquela's story is told - nursing school to become a midwife, dealing with news of Hitler's atrocities against the Jews. Further tragedy when the Jews were rescued from the camps, and then had no 'homeland' to return to. Thousands of them ended up in refugee camps which were not much better than where they had been. Raquela is sent to some of these camps to care for the pregnant women there, to deliver their babies, as well as delivering hope of eventual freedom. The book is an excellent history lesson from the point of view of one who lived it. The Arab-Israeli conflict is nothing new, and the Jews still struggle to claim their 'homeland'.

This is an amazing book. It is a page turner, although I am reading it more slowly as I want to take it in more and not finish too fast. Ruth Gruber was an amazing writer. I am sad she is gone now at 105 in 2016. Her life itself was an amazing life, spanning World War II, etc.. This book really provides an inside look at what it was like in Israel after the war when Israel had to fight to exist. It is nothing short than a miracle of God that they did. The evil of the British at that time is mind boggling. The British government treated the Jews that had been released from prison camps almost as badly as the Nazi's did. I still don't get it. It is very much the personal story of Raquela, but also the story of the early beginnings of Israel. There is so much I didn't know or understand about that time period. I am a lover of Israel and believe that they will prevail as God will never forsake them. Anyone who has any interest in Israel should read this book.

I loved this first-hand account of Ruth Gruber's life- beginning as a young child in Jerusalem to becoming a highly respected nurse/midwife during that time in history when hundreds of thousands of Jewish refuges came to Israel from the horrific prison/extermination camps in Germany. They came to the Promised Land rejoicing at this fulfillment of their dream of freedom, and of finally being able to establish a new life in Israel... only to find themselves once again in prison camps! In utter dismay, they are confined behind barbed-wire fences where they lived more years without the freedom they longed for. Though excruciatingly painful to read at times, the author paints for us a clear and haunting portrait of a brave people with an indomitable spirit who continue to overcome their circumstances. Ruth G.- who has her own share of tragedies, takes us on an unforgettable journey that will not be forgotten.

It's not.What the author does provide in "You & Your Thoughts: The Power of Right Thinking" is much more powerful than any political thought ever...and there have been some powerful political ideas or thoughts.Enough about, or not about, politics.From the Foreward, "Many Christians are trudging through life without any compass, unaware of the transcendent yet everyday practicality of the timeless truths of God's Word. Rediscovering a life of confidence and hope is what this book is all about."In this updated version, the original was published in 1977, a few minor changes have been made to bring the text up to date, but all the original ideas of Dr. Radmacher have been retained. I did, however, find it a bit hard to get through. It wasn’t the material as I found most of the material to be thoughts that I agreed with. I guess it just didn’t grab my full attention so it was a bit of a struggle to finish. If it would have been a book that I had just picked up then I probably wouldn’t have finished it. I was asked for an honest review so I read it through so that I could give it an honest review.Overall, I would recommend this book. Given some of the things that Dr. Radmacher addresses within the book, it would seem that he has a bit of a Calvinistic slant, which I wouldn’t hold to. But I would recommend this book for anyone wanting more information on proper thinking for a follower of Jesus.

When you first see the title you may think, like me, that this is some sort of positive thinking self-help book with some "Christianese" thrown in for good measure. That is not at all what this is, though.Dr. Radmacher encourages his readers to have their minds transformed by God's word. Throughout the book he applies this main idea to various topics. He lays the groundwork in the beginning and then addresses how Christians should think about:GodThe MindThe ChurchProphecySelf-WorthThen he talks about the payoff of right thinking.If you have trouble with applying 2 Corinthians 10:5 "We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ," to your life then this book will get you going in the right direction.I think there were places where the exegesis of Scripture could have been better, but overall this is a good book on taking every thought captive.

This was the best book for any parent or athlete, Jonathan Edwards knows what he is talking about plus he is one of the top lacrosse goalie coaches ever! Read it if you have a child who wants to play sports What an amazing book!!!

Wow. Super thorough. Not like any other book out there. Easy read. Nice and tidy chapters. Some concepts that have never been written about in this way before. My daughter lacrosse goalie and I read it together.

"This book is filled with so much coaching love, it's ridiculous! I've worked with Jonathan (aka "Coach Edwards" since 2008 when I hatched a plan to be the world's ONLY four decade winter Olympian ('88,'92, '02, and 2010). This was a HUGE goal because I had been retired for 6 years and was trying to do it on one of the most dangerous tracks in the world. Jonathan helped me to create a plan for athletic success. That plan is inside THIS book! It's a big book, seriously. But if you're serious about your athletic goals then this is a book you want to have by your side. This is one of those books that's written from a Coach to his athlete, but even if you're a parent or a coach, you will get a TON out of this book. It will reveal aspects of being a success in your sport that you've never even considered. I'm a little biased because I've experienced his mental prep and overall strategy for over ten years now. You're going to get it in one book! It's also laid out in very easy to read chunks. Read it on the bus. In bed. In the bathroom! The sooner you understand all this the sooner you will have success. Many more to come, high points of Sunday afternoons, savoring a chapter at a time, much too good to race through.I needed no sample when Amazon suggested Streets of Paris, because its web page noted "Nearbys". For me, Hidden Garden nearbys were perfect chapter ends, using Google's Paris satellite map to zoom garden and nearbys. Now I zoom chapter streets and nearbys ... memories and discoveries. They too love Paris, or are going there for a first time, well equipped with both the Streets and the Hidden Gardens.

I know that it will enhance what will probably be my next and 25th trip to Paris.Aside from professional and personal experiences, my knowledge of Paris was based on Baedecker's Paris and Environs, 1910 edition, which I used on my first trip, plus a subsequent number of green Michelin's, issued over a period of years. Paris is both an historical phenomenon and an evolving city. One can never know everything about Paris, nor can one ever have enough books about Paris, because each one enhances your appreciation and understanding of this amazing and wonderful place. Susan Cahill's "The Streets of Paris" is a compendium of enhanced details and useful and appropriate knowledge that I know will enhance my next Paris experience and those of everyone who purchases a copy. In particular, I found pages 134 and 135 to be entrancing because they recall what was once the terroir of some of the most brilliant minds of the 20th century: Camus, de Beauvoir and Sartre, As a graduate student, I would go there hoping, by chance, to see one of them. Beyond recreating memories, this book brings sections of the city to life in the present with accurate details of current conditions so that it is possible to know a location both as historical fact and its present configuration.I could not recommend this book more highly!Allon SchoenerI could not recommend this book more highly.
