The Freedom Socialist Party pioneered in refining and applying this leadership element of Trotsky's analysis. Nichol writes, "Socialist feminism was born among the explosive demands in the 1960s for civil rights, gay pride and women s liberation. To the bottom-line socialist pledge of support for the movements of the oppressed, socialist feminism adds the leadership of the most oppressed." Leon Trotsky was undoubtedly the greatest mind that ever contributed to the socialist movement. His concept of 'permanent revolution' was developed by Karl Marx, and next to Trotsky, Cuba's Che Guevara was its greatest component. Guevara became a martyr to the cause; Trotsky was expelled from Russia by Stalin because of it. He saw the bureaucracy of Stalinism as the bane of the revolution, and a century later we must agree. Trotsky migrated to Mexico where he continued to write works of historical significance. Eventually he was silenced by Stalin's assassins, but his works remain as a testament to his genius.His biggest detriment was his tunnel vision in regard to global politics. His life in Russia made him believe that socialism was the only true solution to imperialism and economic inequality. In this work, he never explores the possibility of capitalism providing the socioeconomic development as in America. Instead he belabors the bourgeois European society and its failing. He uses it as a paradigm to show how global socialism is the only solution for economic instability and political turmoil.Despite this, his work provides a plumb line in comparing the true principles of socialism to the failing systems that have fallen short of Trotskyite standards. If anything, it is a valuable work that provides a glimpse into one of the most influential minds of the 20h century.

Trotsky is a brilliant man, and a great writer. The work is an example of the blueprint he would have followed had he not lost the power struggle with that thug Stalin.

Many people who consider themselves "Trotskyists," a term which has less and less meaning in today's world, view that Trotsky's theory of the permanent revolution is his most important contribution to Marxist thought. It's worth noting that during the four World Congresses of the Communist International held during Lenin's lifetime, no one ever discussed the theory either pro or con. The Comintern publishing house published Results and Prospects in different languages, but they also published works by Lenin that took a different approach. It's uncertain if Lenin ever read Results and Prospects. He mentioned it, but never quoted from it. Many revolutionaries who usually read Trotsky didn't, since Trotsky published it in a book that mostly contained already published material, along with this, which was new. Plus, most of the first printing fell into Tsarist hands.Was Trotsky more correct than Lenin? First, about what? They both agreed that the working class, not the bourgeoisie would lead the revolution. They both agreed on the international character; Lenin didn't even think a deep going bourgeois-democratic revolution could last without help from the workers of the major imperialist powers. Lenin was more correct on the agrarian question, one of the most important questions in a largely peasant country. He was correct on the organization question. Trotsky thought you could just be a member of the RSDLP, without taking sides, calling for unity of the Bolsheviks and Mensheviks, and that you could have a loose structure. Lenin already saw the soviets as the future organs of state power. Despite his outstanding role in the St. Petersburg soviet in 1905, Trotsky didn't see this. Was Trotsky correct on the class character of the revolution? Only if you think it was possible to be certain in the aftermath of the 1905 revolution. I don't.Much of the leadership of the July 26 Movement considered themselves communists, but they didn't advance a socialist program. Because they were dishonest? Because they were Stalinists? Neither! They didn't know for certain how thing would turn out, but a revolutionary democratic program was correct, given the backwardness of most of the country. They didn't have any theory viewing the socialist character of the revolution as a given, and neither did they have a theory that it was impossible. Before even coming to power, the Cubans started carrying out their radical program (see Women in Cuba: The making of a revolution within the revolution. From Santiago de Cuba and the Rebel Army, to the birth of the Federation of Cuban Women).Was a socialist revolution possible in south Africa? I think it's clear that only a bourgeois-democratic revolution was (see The Coming Revolution in South Africa (New International no. 5)). South Africa was not yet a nation; it was different categories of people with different rights or lack thereof. Under different circumstances internationally, a socialist revolution might have rapidly followed, but instead, you now have Africans as capitalists and government bureaucrats, and striking miners have been shot.Trotsky's theory was revolutionary, unlike Stalin's placing a brick wall between the democratic and socialist revolutions, but with an ultraleft bias, as pointed out by Jack Barnes in Their Trotsky and Ours. And while Trotsky's theory only had such a bias, in the hands of various sectarians who call themselves "Trotskyist," the ultraleftism became rampant.The Permanent Revolution, the other part of the book, was written in response to a polemic by Karl Radek while he was still a member of the Left Opposition. While Radek had always opposed Trotsky's theory, he clearly wrote this polemic to get in the good graces of Stalin, and as such, it was an attack on the Left Opposition, which Radek was soon to leave. Trotsky answered Radek, and unfortunately defended his old theory, which he had not previously raised at any point since joining the Bolsheviks. Even on tactical grounds, this was a big mistake. It placed Trotsky as having been opposed to Lenin, instead of placing the two of them in opposition to Stalin's opportunism.The two works in this book are of historical importance, and every revolutionary should read them, but they should also read critiques. In addition to Their Trotsky and Ours, it is useful to read some of the works of Joseph Hansen, former secretary to Trotsky. Without his contributions on the workers and farmers government, the Barnes critique could never have been written. In regard to this, Hansen's essential works include The Workers' and Farmers' Government and Dynamics of the Cuban Revolution: A Marxist Appreciation.Also relevant is the debate between Doug Jenness and Ernest Mandel entitled Bolshevism and the Russian Revolution, although I'm personally not too impressed with either of them in this particular debate.If it was so important, why is there only one short reference to the theory of permanent revolution in all the resolutions and discussions in Founding of the Socialist Workers Party: Minutes and Resolutions, 1938-39? In all of Cannon's published writings, I found only one reference to the theory of permanent revolution. Don't get me wrong; I'm not suggesting he had a disagreement with it, only that he was able to explain his ideas on the world very well without mentioning it. You will find it discussed in a lot of Hansen's writings, but Hansen, although unaware of it, was actually undermining the theory. Shortly after the publication of Barnes' critique, the majority of the Fourth International, voiding a whole number of past resolutions, declared that a workers and farmers government had never existed anywhere!Most importantly, read Trotsky's most important works, including History of the Russian Revolution,The Revolution Betrayed,The Third International after Lenin, In Defense of Marxism: The Social and Political Contradictions of the Soviet Union, and The Struggle against Fascism in Germany (Merit), among many more.

Trotsky's writings are now well established in our literary cannon; however, "Results and Prospects" and "The Permanent Revolution" are two short works that usually are left out-- to the detriment of our political understanding of the Bolshevik movement, the course of the Russian Revolution, and the ideology that informed (and still might inform) revolutionary socialism.Results and Prospects was written shortly after the 1905 Russian Revolution, which succeeded (after brutal Czarist repression) in establishing a conciliatory liberal parliamentary government-- the Duma. Trotsky, along with his interlocutors Lenin and Luxemburg, analyzed the revolution in the spirit of Marx in the revolutions of 1848 and 1871 (the Paris Commune), to learn the lessons of the revolution and the potential for further emancipatory change--hence the title, results and prospects. The small book establishes two main points: first, in Russia a liberal revolution must necessarily be followed by proletarian revoltion or else it soon must be followed by a period of reaction; second, a revolution in Russia will fail if it does not ignite a revolution across the (at the time) 'developed' world--Western Europe. These arguments will be developed and practiced in the revolutionary Marxism of Trotsky, Lenin and Luxemburg through the Russian Revolution. Most importantly, they clear up many misconceptions about Trotsky's theory of revolution.The Permanent Revolution was written much later, following the Bolshevik Revolution, and was addressed specifically to incipient revolutionary struggles in the backwards countries in Asia that were supported early on by the Third International (before being subverted by Stalinism).At the end of the day, this edition is timely and well put together. The font is a little awkward, unfortunately. The essays by Lowy are informative and interesting. The overall production is rather tacky, much like Verso's Revolution! series that feature the likes of Mao, Ho Chi Minh, Robespierre, Trotsky and Jesus-- the relation between arbitrary at best. The exhortation by Hugo Chavez on the back, supporting the 'permanent revolution,' is comical considering Chavez clearly has not studied socialist theory or cares to realize even an ounce of their ideals.That Hugo Chavez misrecognizes himself for a Trotsky is an indication that Trotsky should be more widely read and understood by everyone generally interested in Left politics and its history...in other words, the Left's results and prospects for future emancipatory change!

I love the concept of this book. Being widowed for the past 2 years, I found myself dreading managing meals every evening. Eating healthy became a chore and I would find myself snacking on junk food because the labor of daily cooking for myself and no one else was a reminder every day of my loss. I love the fact I don't have to come up with a shopping list and in one single day of just a few hours I have complete HEALTHY meals for the rest of the week. So far the recipes are delicious, lots of flavor. I am happily anticipating cooking my way through all 4 seasons. This is the cookbook I have been searching for my entire cooking life.Edit to my previous review: After using this cookbook for several weeks I find my grocery bill has significantly decreased, and I'm not wasting food that I had bought, thinking to cook and ending up throwing it out, because I left it sit in the refrigerator too long.

**UPDATE AT BOTTOM**I read about this book on a blog and thought it was an awesome idea. My husband and I have been trying to do more prep on the weekends since the weekdays are so busy and also try to find some new things to make instead of the easy standbys. We tried out one of the winter recipes and went a little nuts and followed everything exactly the first time through figuring we could freeze whatever was leftover. We followed the grocery list (thankfully we had quite a few things on hand already)- some of which is not the easiest to find in all grocery stores. I definitely suggest if you're going to be doing any of the fish recipes, load up at Costco/Sam's otherwise it gets very pricey very quickly.Following the recipes and the weekend cooking itself. Well, this particular menu said it would take 3 hours. Ok, I figured it might be closer to 4 our first time through. No. We are both fairly adept in the kitchen and it took us both working nearly 5.5 hours. That's completely insane. All I can say is it better be good. I tasted some of the stuff (the lime ice cream is to die for) and the pork tastes pretty good. I'm skeptical about some of the other stuff.In summary, some of the things that bugged us:- Much quicker, less effort ways to accomplish the same result. For example, it would have been much easier to crockpot the Garlicky Beans and the pulled pork than just letting them sit on the stove for nearly 3 hours taking up valuable space. Heck, the green rice probably could've been accomplished the same way. Thank goodness I had an ice cream maker because checking on something in the freezer several times an hour for a few hours is just annoying. Or, here's a thought, just buy lime sherbet if neither of those ideas appeal to you.- Prepping. I think this is where a lot of our time went. It would have been really nice if there was a list on one page how everything had to be prepped without digging into the recipes. For instance, we went through a ton of limes but I only zested a squeezed a few for one recipe. When it was time for the next, I had to go back, pull everything back out, etc. (that happened on 3 or 4 separate occasions over the 5+ hours). It would have been nice to just do it all at once. Same thing happened with pretty much all the produce. For the pork, I could've had the butcher cut it and prepare it which probably would've shaved off 20 minutes. Ditto for the fish. Since I didn't feel like carrying around the whole book grocery shopping, we just took a picture of the list and went. Even a sub bullet under each one with how they'd be prepared in each recipe would be helpful and maybe even referencing the recipe. Oh, and make sure you have good kitchen knives and that they're sharp.- Descriptions. I disagree with what some other reviews say that this is good for newer/novice cooks. It most definitely is not. I'd say between the two of us, we're in the solid intermediate range of cooking skills and there were some things in the book that didn't make much sense at all and had us falling back on what we already knew to wing it. Fortunately, we've worked with most of the ingredients that were in this first round of recipes before but if you had never used shallots, serrano peppers, or poblanos then (or even know the difference between those), then this book will be a challenge. I won't even get started on what the heck they were trying to describe with the fish tents or something. If the description is long enough to be a gigantic paragraph that needs to be re-read at least 6 times- please provide a freaking picture. I still have no idea what it was supposed to look like and gave up and did it my own way.- Time. I don't know where the cooking times came from but everything literally took double the time the book called for. Pork stayed on for almost an additional 1.5 hours to reduce down (ahem...a crockpot could've done this). The fish had to cook waaaaaay longer than called for and by this time it was getting super late so I just finished it by lightly broiling to make a nice crust.All in all the recipes look good and have some decent ideas but cooking for 6 hours on the weekend is probably more time than I would've spent cooking prior to this. This was no exaggeration in the least. I'm willing to give it another go now that I know what to expect but sheesh, one more weekend cooking spree like this last one and I'm going to call this a failed attempt.**********UPDATE AFTER FULL WEEK************After going through the full week and adding all the time up, I think we'll just pick and choose which recipes we want and plan on doing only a couple days' worth instead of a full week. I will say, it was a huge relief to have everything planned out for that week and maybe just putting together a few ingredients for a salad (by the way, the watercress salad with the lime dressing was so simple but very fresh, bright, and delicious). I keep remaking this dressing just to have around now.Most of the recipes were good. The fish was a bit of a disaster and the way they had you place the lime slices on them when baking created a super bitter, lime rind taste that was nearly impossible to cover up. So yeah...won't do that again.It was nice to have lunches that I wasn't "meh" about or were the same boring thing. The pork tacos and pickled onions (another staple I will be keeping around) were very, very good.We will definitely keep using this cookbook but given what we learned in the first go-around, we're definitely going to adjust how we do everything and insert our own shortcuts when going the long way around is totally unnecessary.

I am off to a great start with the book. I have cooked parts of two menus. The menus make massive amounts of food, we don't eat dessert, and there are just 2 of us, so I've been only making a few of the recipes at a time and halving them. The recipes I've made so far (rosy chicken, roasted applesauce, spicy pork, pickled onions, coleslaw with lime dressing, etc.), have been really really good. It's also been a good learning tool for me - I do not tend to prepare food in advance, except soups and braises, so the practice of also preparing (and correctly storing) salad components and sides has been terrific. Spending several hours on the weekend cooking is a bummer for me, don't get me wrong - but taking the anxiety/agony of meal planning/shopping/cooking/cleaning out of the equation on busy weekdays really changes things for me, and makes me glad I took the time. The limitation for me for this book is that not all of the menus appeal, but if you can flexibly move across menus and pick and choose components, there are a lot of good ideas.

I’ve long been a fan of Amanda Hesser’s writing and recipes, and this latest cookbook didn’t disappoint. If you’re an aspiring foodie who enjoys cooking seasonally and aren’t daunted by the idea of spending a couple hours of your weekend cooking meals for the week ahead, you will love this book. I’d been in a food rut since the birth of my baby, and I wondered if I’d ever have the time to cook the kinds of adventurous meals I’d enjoyed making before. Amanda Hesser and co-author Merrill Stubbs showed me the way! By cooking 1-2 main dishes ahead of time and combining them with different components to create a variety of meals, you can make the most of your time and ingredients throughout the week. I appreciate that dessert is always a part of the menu, and that several options are given for simplifying your weekly meal plan if you find yourself short on prep time. Thank you for helping this foodie and new mom find joy and confidence in the kitchen again!

This is the best cookbook I've ever purchased. The binding and color photos show the quality of the book.This book teaches you how to cook, not just recipes. I can now look at ingredients and make many quick meals or if them innerspring of feeling the need to purchase items only for one recipe.The recipes themselves tend to be things I never would have dreamed to make. --It's not just another cookbook filled with duplicate recipes with one slight change to them (ie another spaghetti recipe or one more chicolate chip cookie recipe).I love how I buy pretty basic ingredients and have enough food for a week of dinnersband a few lunches.You have to be ok with trying things you've never had before; but if you're up for me things. You'll love this and learn a lot. No expensive kitchen gadgets needed, and eat seasonal items more. Fabulous book!!

I believe all religion initially came about to guide people for a better life. However, as time went by it became more complicated and troublesome because of ignorance of interpretation of original message. So we go back to the first simple guidance and easy formula for life ing better ( Good thoughts , Good deed, Good words ). As easy as that and that's why I think this book is fantastic ( easy and direct to the point )

A book that explains the religion taught by Zoroaster, I understand this is one of the first monotheistic religions- key words to live by, good thoughts, good words, good deeds

Dr. Kapadia, MBBS (British equivalent of MD), lays out a good overview of the basic tenets of Zoroastrianism. As I was reading this Kindle version I realized that I had read this little book years ago, early sixties, borrowed from the sole bookcase at the Agiary (Parsee Temple), in Bangalore, India. This text was written in the 1920s-30s while India was still under the Raj. Consequently most of the references are British sources and the writing style is definitely arcane and quite turgid.The book's organization is roundabout to say the least. The first part is mostly Zoroastrian Apologetics followed by brief dictionary-style definitions of various aspects of theology. The second part abruptly devolves into definitions of various terms and customs. My guess is Dr. Kapadia meant this book to be read by Parsees and not by the general public because some basic misconceptions of Zoroastrianism are not explained. For example, many in the West believe that Zoroastrians are fire worshipers when in reality they USE fire as a vicarious medium for worship. Also explaining the connotations with regards to the undergarments that Parsees wear would have helped. For example, what exactly is the Sudra? What exactly is the Kasti? These things are not explained. So why am I stating all these deficiencies? Just so that if a non-Parsee were to read this book she would get only ONE aspect of what Zoroastrianism is all about.Also the Kindle formatting leaves much to be desired. Pages abruptly end at the middle of a paragraph etc. But these are cavils. I would recommend this book whole heartedly to all Parsees and with a healthy dose of caution to non-Parsees.

I chose this book because I was looking for information about Zoroaster and Zoroasterianism. It was much too short and was imcomplete. It contained some information but you'd want to buy more books. I'd recommend it to people with only a passing interest.

This book was recommended by my sons tutor. Its a terrific look into what the SSAT is all about, although he has tsken it once already. We love that he is able to time himself on each section and go back to correct. He feels much better about taking the test for the 2nd time. I would recommend this book to anyone with kids about to take the SSAT for the first time or the third time.

The questions in this book is way too simple comparing to the real test.

This is probably the best SSAT prep book besides the actual book from the SSATB. The questions in this book are similar to the questions that you will find in the SSATB Upper Level Practice book, which you can buy for $35. I like to use the two books in tandem: give practice problems and homework from the Unofficial Practice Tests, and then use the SSATB Practice Tests for interim assessments. The Unofficial book is good, but I am not confident that it is norm-referenced like the SSATB Practice Test, so I stick with the SSATB Practice Test to assess a student's performance percentiles.

Not enough practice tests.

This book should be half its size. The text is laid out in large fonts and double or triple spaced. For example, the synonym section contains five questions per page, which is 24 lines on a page. The math section contains three questions per page. A huge waste of paper for the sake of making the book appear more substantial. The question quality is average--there are both worse and better out there.

It's great to have practice tests. Tutoring is important, but without the practice tests, kids don't know if their pacing is on target or how it feels to take a 3 hour test in one sitting.

Advertising this book to be compared to the likes of Fredrik Backman's novel A Man Called Ove (5 star rating) is a flat out lie. This author does not compare with his style of story telling. The book is a bust. Don't even bother with it. Not funny, not enlightening, not relatable (no matter how old you may or may not be, and it is not plausible. I'm beginning to think it has no point. There is a part where one of the characters says he is bored. I said, Me too. I'm on chapter 74 with 20 pages left.The front cover says, "The Funniest Book This Year" - Ramilien Magazine (Norway.) Makes me question the lack of Norwegians comedians. I laughed once and that was the first chapter and the only reason I laughed was when I stopped reading and tried to imagine someone actually doing it.The only reason I'm finishing this book is because it was chosen for our book club (so sorry I nominated it.) I wouldn't recommend this book to my worse enemy.That's a pretty harsh review. Perhaps if I hadn't been told it was a funny book and compared to the likes of Fredrik Backman, I would not have reacted with such heat. I stand by what I said this book is not. The book is actually more like an over the top dull cozy mystery where the main characters are the actual crooks. At 400 pages, it is way too long.

...go so wrong? I dunno, but this novel manages it.Five little old people decide to embark on a life of crime in order to fund a better lifestyle for themselves and other elderly folks. They manage to swipe two priceless masterpieces from the national art gallery. They collect a ransom. They also rob a money-transport truck. They get away from both police and the mafia. And they get away with the crimes. What could possibly go wrong in the telling of this tale?Well, one could become so repetitive that readers want to gouge out their eyes. One could make every other living human in the story as dumb as a box of hammers. And one could stretch credulity beyond the point of breaking. All these reasons are a part of this novel. But what really made me want to hurl my Kindle at the wall was the repetitive use of the term "Zimmer frame," which appeared 77 times. One and a half stars.

I thought this to be a delightful read. Fun, sassy, a quirky romp. It was a fast read; I found myself zipping through the pages, cheering the elderly characters fighting for independence and reveling in mischief.... However, being of the age considered "elderly" myself, I had to laugh at the "old lady" on the cover, and at the age the author describes as "old." Catharina Ingleman-Sundberg must be so young that anyone over 60 is, in her eyes, seen as being somewhere in their 80's... But I loved it all, anyway. A gifted writer, and a charming story.

I really hate to pan a book, but this one was painful to read. It sounded so promising and had the potential to be sweet and funny. But it was so long and drawn out. And it was not funny. As I was reading, I kept thinking that this may have been better as a 90 minute movie with a lot of slap stick comedy and quirky character actors.Martha Andersson and her four friends live in a retirement home that is more interested in saving money than in caring for the residents. Fed up with budget cuts, Martha and her friends decide to escape. They lodge at a very fancy hotel and plan a robbery at a nearby art museum. Their goal is to ransom the paintings. Their other goal is to get caught and spend some time in prison, where they believe the conditions are better than at the retirement home. All goes mostly as planned except they lose the paintings and half of the ransom money. There are multiple mishaps and something involving the Yugoslavian mafia, a hotel maid, and the nurse at the retirement home. Once the mafia surfaced, I started skimming.I bought this book because it was compared to A Man Called Ove, Where’d You Go Bernadette, and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. This book is none of those things. It is a very watered down version of A Man Called Ove at best. The writing is basic, the story is not interesting, it was not funny, and I could have edited out about 200 pages. For wit, insight, and charming characters you would be better off reading anything by Fredrik Backman.

I am a little old lady myself. Sometimes we don 't get the respect we deserve. I couldn't go to the length these oldies did But I have felt like hitting a few young crazies over the head with a board. What has happenedto respect for the elderly?

I’d prefer to be able to rate this book 2 1/2 stars, if I could. The language is a bit awkward which I put down to its probably having been translated from Swedish into English. It’s a one punch line joke told repeatedly. Five feisty seniors embark on a crime spree out of boredom and with the goofy notion that prison would be more agreeable than their old pensioners’ home. You will have to suspend belief to buy into their art heist. But more than that, you will have to be satisfied with meager pickings as only the five elderly characters are even minimumly developed. I like having elderly people as the focal or principal figures in a book, but every other character is totally without character, in a manner of speaking. I’m 65% through the book and am tired of waiting for the laugh-out-loud parts described by another reviewer here. The book isn’t terrible but 2 1/2 Stars, tops.

This is the book I've been wanting Jared Wilson to write for years. I read "The Prodigal Church" a couple of times. But it was more of a "what not to do" book. It was a critique of the attractional model of church ministry. This book is a positive sequel of a more biblical alternative to the attractional model. It is the "Deep and Wide" for the gospel-centered movement.This may also be Jared's most well-written book. Jared is a fantastic writer no matter the subject. And in this book his gift really shines. While the book is laid out by subject that is typical of most church ministry books, a story of the fictional LifePoint church is interwoven throughout each chapter. The story really makes the topics discussed in each chapter come to life while not making me cringe for seeming phony.I don't agree with everything in the book. My journey has taken me from the attractional church world to the missional gospel-centered church world to now the more confessional Reformed church world (I'm still Baptist though). Therefore, I'm not as convinced as Jared when he starts getting into missional church language or even his use of Johnathan Edwards' works when it comes to measuring church health. But I get where he's coming from and agree with 90% of what he says. And I find it all very helpful when thinking about how we do church.I commend this book to anyone at any level of church ministry.

It feels like we should be done body slamming the seeker-sensitive movement. Wasn't that so 20 years ago? Unfortunately, like the undead in a bad zombie movie, it just keeps coming back. And JCW's latest critique of the movement is as readable as it is timely.Split into a fictional dialogue between a disillusioned seeker-sensitive pastor and his staff and a more traditional, how-to format, the book is accessible for people like me who don't tend to finish Christian living books. I read the first few chapters and move on (with apologies to all my favorite Christian authors). So a little liveliness goes a long way in this genre for me, and Wilson's tone and style in both formats here are a breeze to read and understand.It seems to me this book was written with practicality in mind. Yes, yes, we all know the attractional church method is bunk---but how do we pull our churches out of that mindset? I pastored a church for several years that was struggling with this very question, and it's almost funny how well Wilson's fictional bits nail the actual conversations that go on in that kind of a situation. He poses important questions and offers practical steps, rather than just dunking on the Osteens, Stanleys, and Hybels of the world without holding forth some kind of alternative.I guess the big takeaway from this book is yes, moving away from man-centered ecclesiology to God-centered is going to be awkward, difficult, and costly, but it's also going to be worth it.

Helpful, honest, insightful, and challenging. Wilson’s writing is witty and palatable. If the always prowling enemy of comparison and jealousy speaks to your mind then you will benefit from this.

This is the book I wish I had when leading our church through a gospel renewal. There's nothing new or novel here. It's not the typical "church growth" book, with 5 innovative and simple steps to break the 200 barrier. Jared simply lays out the biblical alternative to the attractional "seeker" model of church, helping the reader rediscover the biblical priorities of faithfulness and fruitfulness. It's a reminder of what the church is, who the worship service is primarily for, and that the gospel must be the driving force of all we do, rather than simply be assumed.This is a must-read that is clear, biblical, practical, and filled with wisdom. I also found the appendices particularly helpful. The first summarizes the basic principles and steps from each chapter, and the second is a troubleshooting manual of sorts with answers to many "what-if" questions related to gospel-centered ministry.The hard part will be getting pastors to read it that don’t think they need to.

Jared does a tremendous job laying out the issues plaguing the modern church but doesn't just leave it there. Instead, he offers very real and practical solutions to the church leader in how to identify the difficulty with the modern paradigm, and how to fix what's wrong. He delves into the philosophy behind church growth movements, explains the Biblical corrective, and gives the fix. This book is so needed and is a very fresh take. Very well done and very helpful!

This book is very helpful in identifying what the church is to be verses what we tend to make the church. Jareds writing makes it easy to understand. Truly timely and very very helpful. My ministry is better because of this work.

He gets at the heart of biblical ecclesiology: numerical growth is only a win if that growth is made up of people tethering their lives to the gospel. Jared irenically yet pointedly demonstrates that the American business model of church is not the biblical model — and then tells us how to shift our vision and paradigms.
