This is a great series for people who are new to faith and those who are more mature Christians get a lot out of it too. Louis Giglio is a powerful speaker and everyone enjoyed the study.

A second-generation Kenyan who has professionally hunted big game for more than 30 years and is an honorary Uganda National Park warden, Herne did exhaustive archival research and conducted countless interviews to produce this encyclopedia of gore and glamour. From roughly 1890 to 1970, American and European aristocrats, movie stars and business tycoons converged on East Africa, hiring professional white hunters to lead them on lengthy, luxurious shooting expeditions. Theodore Roosevelt's 1909 safari lasted for months and employed 500 porters. The early generation of white hunters set the pace for a hard-drinking, bed-hopping lifestyle. Later, Bror Blixen, Isak Dinesen and Denys Finch-Hatton carried on just as flamboyantly as their screen counterparts in Out of Africa. In turn-of-the-century Nairobi, inebriated ladies rode their ponies up steps into bars. But the dangers were real, and Herne details various narrow escapes and deaths by mauling. Typically colorful is the story about the filming of King Solomon's Mines, during which a bull elephant rushed the cameras and was stopped by a bullet. The relieved crew and actors posed for pictures on the animal, which disappeared later that day, never to be found again. Heavier on anecdotes than on overview, Herne's book skips discreetly over all the cultural and political ironies of Europeans coming to Africa to shoot at its natural resources. I enjoyed this book very much. A lot of stories about the old and new White Hunters of Africa. From Cunninghame and Schillings to Ker and Downey. Hunting is about over with for Africa. These are some great stories. I am not a hunter. This is about the people and the adventure of Safaris. A lot about animals they hunted. Lots of times the animal wins. Many of these hunters died doing what they loved to do. I highly recommend this book..

What amazing collection of stories as well as history of not only "white hunters" but history, culture as well as the sad decline of African wildlife largely due to the end of hunting in many African countries.Many of these hunters will only be remembered because of this book - because they never wrote themselves.Thank you Mr. Herne

The story would be helped by more overview telling the reader how the profession peaked and faded. It would also help to map out the people who were active during each given time period. Finally, some hunters were mentioned but little detail was provided. In particular J. A. Hunter was mentioned several times in conjunction with other hunters, but little detail was provided other than a bit about his arrival in 1908. A fast Wikipedia search confirmed my suspicion that he had a long and significant career but he may not have been as colorful as some of the hunters who were featured. Unfortunately the author dangled the name, suggesting that more was to be learned yet he left me to search on my own.

Good stories, great insight into a culture that no longer exists, and an unintentional commentary on colonial Africa versus independent Africa. Very readable and interesting. Lots of info on European and American celebrities, as well. Only negative is that the introductions to different hunters begin to get predictable...brief descriptive paragraph with superlatives varying only in physical descriptions, but almost interchangeable.

Once you start White Hunters you can’t put it down! It covers not only the highly famous White Hunters but many of the less famous also with no holds bared information on what they did and how they ended up. Absolutely great and a good reference for those interested in the subject.

The book has a simple, easy set up. Each chapter deals with a individual or group of individuals who went to hunt or live in Africa. The next chapter deals with people who, usually, were trained by the folks in the earlier chapters. Or were related by birth. Or shoot at. It is a history of 20th Century Africa person by person. Hunters, ivory collectors, photographers, families, soldiers, Hollywood stars, trackers and criminals. Death, romance, big game hunting and humor all rolled up in one book. With politics, world history and unexplored territories tossed in for good measure. With a few maps and lots of black and white photos, this is a must for anybody interested in big game hunting, Africa or world history.

Hunting was different that it is now. I think today's true hunters hunt humanly and respectfully for the animals that are takem.

This book will add to an understanding of the now vanished world of colonial East Africa. For those who are viscerally anti-hunting, this will be a book that will probably not be considered, and that is a pity, because it is about more than hunting -- though there's plenty enough to satisfy fans of Capstick, Hunter, et al. Mr. Herne's homage to a special breed of men (and women), white and black, is well written and ideal for leisurely reading and rereading. It is brimming with anecdotes both amusing and hair-raising. I've given my copy away and am now ordering another. White Hunters is a worthwhile addition to the library of the sportsman or the person interested in colonial Africa, from the late 19th century to independence. Whether relating stories of such early white hunter legends as Selous, Cunninghame and Black, or the role played by white hunters in the oft-mismatched British campaigns against German-led guerilla operations in WWI, or the horrors faced by white settlers during the Mau Mau troubles of the '50s, these tales never bog down. One of my favorite hunters, by the way, was "Shagbag" Collins. On a parallel note, I would recommend, The Life of My Choice by Sir Wilfred Thesiger and Home from the Hill by Hilary Hook, though I'm not sure of the current availability of either of these books.

I'm reading this currently, one chapter at a time as if I'm taking a class. The illustrations and explanations are very helpful. After taking a crash course from an expert photographer years ago, this brings back memories of things he showed me and I did with my camera (but my cluttered mind didn't grasp at the time). I like how this is 7 books in 1. My camera, a Cannon 60D, is one of the cameras used in many of the illustrations - SCORE! I could have bought the book just about my camera, but I really like the additional information this book provides. As the author suggests, it is easy to skip ahead to what you want to know and refer back to what you need to review. I highly recommend getting this book if you need the general information as well as some detailed information to have in your tool box for the future.

This is a great book. I just recently go into photography and I didn't know anything. I just wanted a new hobby to learn about. This book has it all. I recommend it to anyone who is trying out photography for the first time. This book explains all you need to know for getting started in base english and the photos and examples also help a lot. Its full of lots of info that can help take great pictures right from the start and at least make you sound like you know what your doing to others into photography as well.

I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn how to get full use out of their DSLR camera. The author owns both Nikon and Cannon cameras, but all of his writing is neutral to brand, which what he says is applicable no matter what model camera you have. Since he owns a Nikon and Cannon, he will give you some specific examples about how to do a specific function such as programming ISO settings, but the settings are usually similar from camera to camera, just like all Cars have steering wheels, brakes, and signals regardless of company.He covers everything from powering on the camera, storage, lenses, pros and cons of various lenses, lighting, filters, tripods, digital touch up software, shooting styles, and more. He also gives examples of how shots look under different settings, such as a subject shot under multiple F stop (aperture) settings.The book is written for anyone from beginners to mildly experienced amateurs. Everything is explained in a simple and understandable way as well as sometimes coupled with the technical explanation as well.

While the author has some definite - and largely admitted up-front - preferences in cameras, gear and photo & video processing software, by and large he keeps his subject matter generic enough that it can be applied to any Digital SLR camera.I've already started playing around with my aperture, ISO and shutter settings in order to get different results than what "auto everything" would on my camera.This would probably be a good guide for users of digital cameras that are of the higher end "point and shoot" variety, such as the Fuji FinePix 1500 and similar - while they don't have all the functions of a DSLR, they do have a lot of them, and framing and design techniques apply to all cameras. While the camera specific information is already becoming dated due to the introduction of new cameras, it's not nearly as bad as some computer guides - and the information provided forms the base of knowledge needed to guide the purchase of a first DSLR as well.

Too complicated - I don't think I leaned anything. Just went over it few times and nothing. I leaned more from other online tutorials. It maybe good for reference or if you don't know anything at all about your camera - but its is not a good book if you looking for simple solutions to complex problems of speed vs light vs....

This is a GREAT book for beginners! I really enjoyed getting to know my camera through this book and i appreciated all the great examples, diagrams, and summaries! I would recommend to anyone looking to get into photography, regardless of whether you've already purchased your DSLR or are still looking!

Too many typos!!! Also an incorrect explanation according to my pro photographer friend. Also a described photo was not the photo shown.I might buy the new edition comming out and hope things are more correct.

The content is okay but the pages started falling out of the book the minute I opened it to a certain section.
