Great information. I bought a copy for myself and a friend who taught Virginia History, she had no idea she did not know the real history that Kelso discovered. Not a quick or east read but full of the truth behind Jamestowne History. Every American history teacher should read it.

fascinating especially if you love archaeological puzzles. To find the wealth of information on what was thought to be lost reveals a great and colorful adventure. However, with the profusion of compass designations used in the descriptions, I caught myselft looking for a comprehensive site map with those features identified along with compass orientation. Photos or diagrams of various aspects of the dig give only piecemeal disjointed views. Often captions use directions ("junction of east palsiade wall trench with the north bulwark) but does not orient the photograph or identify those features in the photo. A drawing of the fort superimposed on a photograph is too small, does not indicate a compass orientation, and does not identify the features shown just as one example. A nice double page fold out site map would have added a lot.

The book contains new information about the first successful English colony in America. If your interested in reading about the very beginning go this great country this is a must read. Put a visit to Jamestown on you pocket list.

This book is more current than other books written about this topic. Excellent.

Having recently found that one of my husband's ancestors arrived Jamestown in 1619, this was of particular interest to me. Further, since my American ancestry is New England and New York/New Jersey, my knowledge of Jamestown has fallen short of what it should be. I'm not sure I agree with all of Kelso's conclusions, but the book was informative and am glad I took the time to read it.

Kelso has done a great service in unearthing the early stages of Virginia history at Jamestown. This work is very useful in getting down in the dirt and understanding what really happened at Jamestown. Unfortunately, archeology provides clues but cannot claim 100% accuracy in its assessment of events. This work is designed more for the scholar than for the laymen yet is written well enough if you want more details about the events that transpired in our early history. Recommended for scholars on early colonial history in America as a resource.

The History in this book is great! It goes back to England, and where the men came from the area of England. It talks about the English men how they had a very hard time with the Indians. Some of the men ran off and married the Indians girls, and it tells how tall some of the men were, it's very informative.

Too academic for a general audience. Despite high interest in the subject, I was really bored.

About the Author

Born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1965, Amedeo Salamoni is a ceramic artist living in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. After obtaining a MA from Kean University in Union, New Jersey, he continued his education at the University of Delaware, where he earned his MFA in Ceramics-Sculpture. Amedeo first began wood-firing in 1990 and has built and fired many kilns throughout his career. Currently, he teaches ceramics and sculpture and directs the galleries at George School in Newtown, Pennsylvania. Through writing this book, he hopes to share his passion for wood-firing and to expand the connections among artists who choose this labor intensive and sometimes unpredictable process.

Love books on pottery.

If you like wood fired ceramics, or any ceramics for that matter, you'll love this book. The images of the pots are great, and there's lots of pictures of kilns to pour over as well. This is an expansive survey, though a few notable artists are missing. No matter, you can see their work other places, and there are some under-the-radar artists here that you may not have heard of before but who are making great work. The appendix of clay, glaze, and slip recipes is a bonus, also.

Wood Fired Ceramics contains some of the top artists in the world using the process. It is an amazing collection and the quality of print is top notch along! If you are into ceramics and also love wood fired ceramics it is one that needs to be in your library. It is quite a coffee table book as it is a very large book!

What makes these so moving is that they are the product of a man who went through being removed from his parents, age three, prison, alcoholism and a reunification with his family that led to a productive life thereafter. You get a sense of what his struggles have taught him is meaningful, which we all can learn from.

Love this & a book that I will read many times . . . Quakers have a saying when an person expresses their thoughts, feelings & experiences hey say "Friend speaks my mind." I will take it a step further "Waganese speaks my heart, my being, my soul." This will be my #1 gift to give to others!

This was a great look into Vietnam, from the perspective of a young soldier. Although the book is fiction, there is no doubt about the realities expressed in the book; the reader is immersed into the environment of physical combat, and the experiences of those in it's midst. If you've ever been in or around military combat, this book will resonate. If you have not been around combat, this book will exhibit a slice of the Vietnam 'pie' that so many have endured.

My daughter bought this book for my grandson for his high school summer reading assignment. Trying to get him to get started on it I challenged him that I could finish reading it before he could. And I absolutely HATE to read. All I can say is that I finished it in 5 days and am considering another book by this author. It is a great book and I highly recommend it !!

I was given the option to select from a small list of books for a school assignment and a friend of mine recommended Fallen Angels. I chose it because we like similar books and I've enjoyed every other story I've read by Mr. Meyers, and I do not regret my decision. There were a few errors in the wording of the digital copy compared to the narration (which was phenomenal) but they didn't interfere with my reading experience. Love the book, the author, the narrator, and every detail of the book.

Intense. I had to put it down sometimes to rest my mind from the mental images. That's good writing. Totally recommend.

This was a good book to read. It was an easy read and I would recommend it to the High School level only student beause of the language used by the characters and the grahic war scenes in the book. The relationships that develop through the characters is a reason to want to read it. If you have some historical knowledge of that period it would help you understand the setting of the book and events that led each one the characters to arrive at war in Viet Nam. It is a view of war through the eyes of the author. It is well written and it captures the human side of soldiers who are pressed into situations they have no control over. They must grow up quickly in that hostile environment with what survival skills they have. It keeeps your attention.

The UN Women/USNC Gulf Coast Book Club met on Monday,November 9, 2015 to discuss My House in Damascus: An Inside View of the Syrian Revolution, by Diana Darke. The author has traveled through Syria since 1978, writing guide books for the entire region. She moved to Damascus in 2004 and bought her historical villa in 2004. Through her experiences of buying and restoring her house that she later offered as a sanctuary to friends, Darke presents a clear picture of the realities of life on the ground and what hope there might be for Syria's future. We discussed major themes of the book: history, culture, analysis of the revolution/civil war, human relationships and the author's own spiritual quest reflected in accounts of the several religions of Syria. We applauded this book unanimously, our only reservation being the author's writing device of segues from present to past and future, a style that is sometimes disorienting. We all learned a great deal from the book, which led to in-depth discussion of not only the dynamics of the country's plight, but especially that of its internal displaced persons, and international diaspora of refugees.

I loved this book. I bought it because I was fortunate enough to visit two of the Ottoman houses in the Old Quarter of Damascus in 1999. One was in the process of restoration and the other was fully restored. That experience made me appreciate the beauty of those houses. I longed to get the details of how a Western women bought and restored such a house. It is quite a tale and well worth the price of the book in itself. In addition, the author shares an inside view of ongoing Syrian tragedy. I appreciated the way that she told the story in terms of what happened to her, what she observes, and the experiences of other individuals. It's grounded in reality, unlike the comments of so many experts on television who have never even been to Syria. Don't miss this book if you have an interest in the Syrian people and their beautiful country.

A very well written book, although the time line is a big confusing as it weaves back and forth. However, it is an insightful depiction of today's Syria and the tragedies that have come to this beautiful city and country. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in knowing about Syria and its people and particularly the ancient city of Damascus. Now that Palmyra has been damaged by ISIS and other places are in danger, we can only hope that Damascus will survive.

What a delightful yet painful look at Syria! All too often war seems impersonal and abstract and those involved seem less than human. A complete waste of time and money. This book is misrepresented in what it claims to be about. It contains very little information specific to embedded FreeBSD.The author should have written much more about minimizing the kernel, limiting memory usage, device driver development, and flash storage issues - because these are the topics that are the most relevent to an embedded system. The discussion about using Tomcat, JSP, and JNI to provide web access to an embedded device - while important - is severely lacking.A good book about an embedded operating system will explore the problems and trade-offs that a systems developer will have to make. It would also discuss getting the OS to run on a single board computer - such as one of the devboards listed in the FreeBSD ARM project. This book does neither.

When I skimmed 'Embedded FreeBSD Cookbook' (EFC) in the bookstore, I was impressed by the amount of general FreeBSD information it contained. Now that I've bought and read it, I'm glad this book caught my eye. Although EFC is somewhat dated by its use of FreeBSD 4.4 (released Sep 01), I learned more about about FreeBSD internals. I also gained insights into what is needed to create an embedded appliance from the ground up.EFC describes how the Measurement Computing company used FreeBSD 4.4 to create their Digital Input-Output (DIO) server appliance, built on a Network Engines 'Roadster' platform. The author explains the advantages of embedded systems and why it makes sense to construct them using open source software. He also defends the use of BSD-licensed software to build the DIO.The best aspect of the book was its direct nature and breadth of coverage. EFC addresses many topics in a clear and concise manner, including processes, daemons, system calls, and library usage. I found this direct and efficient approach a good way to become familiar with subjects covered in much greater depth by books like McKusick and Neville-Neil's 'The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD Operating System.'On the downside, for a reader on the eve of 2005, the book is dated in several respects. EFC's use of FreeBSD 4.x means some of its material no longer applies to FreeBSD 5.x. For example, 5.x uses DEVFS in place of manual device node creation. System source code (like the cdevsw structure in bus_private.h) is often much different. Some code, like ch 2's explanation of forking, works on 4.x but not 5.x. The use of the Java JDK version 1.1.8 really dates the book, as well. Finally, several typos change the meaning of parts of the text. For example, p. 30 appears to show 'gcc -00' (two zeroes) when I believe it should be 'gcc -O0' (capital O, zero) to disable compiler optimizations. Below on the same page, objdump should be passed the '--disassemble' or the '-d' switch, not '-disassemble'.Overall, I still liked reading EFC. The book gave me plenty to consider, should I ever want to deploy an embedded appliance. Companies like St Bernard do use FreeBSD in their appliances, so perhaps an update by one of their developers would be in order?

I have several years of experience working on embedded Linux. I've bought this book, thinking it will help me better understand how to use BSD in an embedded env (like number of embedded linux books available). However, instead on focusing on the embedded side, this book simple describe how to wirte deamons, what's a system call etc. Read Steven's books if you need this kind of training.
