He has written three previous film-history books, all of which are superb.This one, Turner Classic Movies: Must-See Musicals: 50 Show-Stopping Movies We Can't Forget, is his most accessible for general readers and for those whose interest in this type of film has been piqued by LA LA LAND.In addition to the superb writing in it, the book is lavish and full of pictures. The quality of those pictures, both the color and the black-and-white ones, is also superb. The paper, binding, and print are all absolutely first-class too. It is a genuine pleasure to hold and read this book.Many years ago, movies were the primary form of entertainment for most people. One could see - but not hear - their favorite actors and actresses.Radio made inroads to audiences because it was "free" entertainment and could be had in the home. However, while one could hear their favorite personalities on the radio, one could not see them.When sound films were introduced, everything was linked, as it were, and audiences were treated by the experience of seeing and hearing their favorites.So-called "silent" films had used just about every type of plot and genre one could imagine EXCEPT for musicals. It is true that some operas were filmed as silent movies and many silent movies had some elaborate scores written especially for them, though these were generally played only in the larger cities."Sound" films offered movies the chance to sing and dance and, even in the early days, feature color sequences and even full-color.Unfortunately, for various reasons, many, perhaps most, of these films have been lost or have certainly been forgotten, and this applies even to movies filmed later (even MY FAIR LADY made in 1964 had to be restored!).This "forgetfulness" is, I believe, the reason for this book. Film history, a part of social history, is important, I believe, because it shows us where we have been, and how we lived, dressed, and even spoke, as do the films themsleves. And the musicals have always been one of the most important type of films even when they temporarily fall out of favor.Richard Barrios has written some very literate and voluminous books about early musicals (especially A Song in the Dark: The Birth of the Musical Film which I HIGHLY recommend).However his earlier books are written more for "movie buffs" (of which I am one) rather than for the general public, though I have to say that A SONG IN THE DARK is a very easy, funny, and compelling "read," one which almost everyone will enjoy.This new one offers that general public a chance to read and learn about musical films made over the last ninety years and in a fashion which, to me, is positively amazing.It is fairly simple (I'm writing rhetorically) for a historian to write at great length about a particular subject of special interest to him or her. Often such books are tiring for many readers (though Richard Barrios' are not).It is VERY hard to write concisely about a subject yet "get the message across" to general readers without boring them. Richard Barrios has succeeded in writing in such a way that no one will be bored!Barrios includes fifty of his particular favorite musical movies (with mention of others which didn't make the cut). He devotes four-to-six pages to each yet gets the essence of each film such that almost any reader will want to watch almost all of them. This level of writing, pithy and to the point, is rare (obviously I can't do it!) and effective.He divides each review into sections: The movie listing (with credits), a one-sentence synopsis (clever and correct!), the review itself, a "What's More" section, a "Musically Speaking" section, and a list of two movies which may be similar to the one under discussion but which could not be included. All of these sections are short, sweet, and to the point.I am amazed that he was able to do this!All of the movies listed are accessible and can be seen on television, in revival theaters, and even on streaming services.Will there be quibbles about the choices of films contained in this book?You bet!You'll see some of them in the reviews here on Amazon. You'll hear some among people discussing the book. I myself wish that certain films had been included.Everyone has his or her own list of "the best."But, considering that this book is limited to fifty musical titles only (with mention of at least another 100), is there ANYONE who can say that any of the titles included should have been eliminated?Not me!I'm sure that an electronic book edition will be fine but I should positively recommend that you buy the printed edition. No electronic book can duplicate the feel and the arrangement of this printed one. (Frankly though, there's nothing wrong with having both.)I only wish that the publishers had chosen to issue this in a slip-cased cloth-bound version! That's how important and wonderful I feel this book is. (If it's ever issued in such a format, I'll buy it immediately!)Obviously I am enamored with Richard Barrios' writing in general and with this book in particular.I cannot recommend it too highly. I don’t know too many people who don’t love movie musicals, and film historian Richard Barrios is one of the most knowledgeable and entertaining writers to cover this field. His latest book, Must-See Musicals: Fifty Show-Stopping Movies We Can’t Forget is just as entertaining as the movies that he writes about. Must-See Musicals is published through Turner Classic Movies and features a forward by Michael Feinstein.I am sure that Barrios had a difficult time selecting just 50 musicals, and those he chose are in chronological order. This also allows the author to provide a short history of musical films as he progresses. He begins with The Broadway Melody (1929) and ends with La La Land (2016). Many blockbusters are in this book including An American in Paris, The Wizard of Oz, Meet Me in St. Louis, West Side Story and The Sound of Music. Two are animated, including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Beauty and the Beast. The list of legendary performers is also impressive and counted among them are Judy Garland, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Julie Andrews, Gene Kelly and Maurice Chevalier. And although most of Barrios’ 50 are well-known, there are few that I never heard of including The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and Cabin in the Sky.Each musical receives 4-6 pages that are jam-packed with information—everything from the credits, year, length of the movie, and a description. Each movie includes some trivia and/or anecdotes under a heading, “What’s More.” For instance, we learn that in Cover Girl, “The five-foot-six [Rita] Hayworth had to wear lower heels when she played opposite [Fred] Astaire.” Or for the Pajama Game, “Originally, Warners had thought of Frank Sinatra, who turned it down, and then Bing Crosby, who wanted too much money.” The role went to John Raitt. There is also a heading, “Musically Speaking,” which as the name implies gives us more information about the musical-aspect of the movie. For instance, Barrios tells us that for West Side Story, “Natalie Wood was crushed when she learned that her vocals of Maria’s songs would be dubbed by Marni Nixon.” The author also gives a list of “More to See” for each selection, in which he recommends additional musicals. This really allows him to swell his list of favorites.But what makes Must-See Musicals so spectacular are all the photographs—many of them full page and in color. Barrios also tracked down all the original movie posters for each selection. Although I consider it a coffee-table-type book, the smaller size and paperback format make it easier to handle and much more affordable. This is truly a stunning book and I have already purchased a number of copies to give as Christmas gifts for this season.

So many times boundaries were crossed from my inlaws and continue to but I have not known what to do in hope to prevent permanently damaging my relationship with them and theirs with their son (my husband) I bought this book! My inlaws marriage and the disfunction of their family is totally different then mine and there's a cultural difference as well not much but enough to see the difference... they have manipulated my husband and much criticized everything being my fault, we are treated like our family isn't worthy enough to invite over, they complain we live too far for them even see their own grandchildren 25-30min, sometimes my father in law has seen he children alone, my brother in laws look at me and my husband uncomfortably and it's just plain weird and disrespectful, considering no one else treats us with such a negative snobby like attitude, really it's because my husbands step mother is overly critical even states she's happy she never had a girl thank god and causes arguments with my father in law if he doesn't side with her about her viewpoint of me and she cries on command which I don't so then I feel like I've suddenly lost the battle if I even try to defend myself! Every relationship and relationships/scenarios with our inlaws are all different, but this book sure brings some comfort in knowing that you can gain that part of your life back without losing your marriage even if your spouse just doesn't get it. My husband is a good man but he has many times tried to just get me to accept continuously be hurt emotionally from them that I can't even eat in peace when I'm around them bc I feel like I'm being watched like a hawk for any little thing. I'm not much of a book worm but I am finding this book has so much in common with my life that I can't wait to finish it I hope it helps me be able to defend myself as a mother without sacrificing my dignity and self respect, giving me good advise to have a backbone and finally draw some boundaries to stop the emotional damage it's doing to me and my marriage.

3 years into a marriage with a man I loved more than anything and I couldn't understand how his family was still such a point of contention. This book addresses the personality types of deceitful and manipulative people, so rather than you as a spouse pointing a finger, your spouse is able to read from a third party what personality traits are healthy and which are toxic. The title is a little harsh, but the lessons on how to address these characters in the family TOGETHER was by far the most important part. As the book says, in law problems are marriage problems. I so so so highly recommend this book if you feel like you can't win, like you hold your tongue around your spouse's family, or if you are so tired of your spouse not understanding how difficult the people in his/her family are to you. Read this book together!! It's a game changer.

Great book. I only wish I had read it 15 years ago as it seemed like the author was writing about my in laws and the absolutely devastating affect they had on our lives. Although, ironically, I'm not sure I would have appreciated it as much had we not so tragically suffered as a result of their toxicity. Family of origin issues can make a person, especially a child, vulnerable to the world's evil, regardless of their age, and "Toxic-In-Laws" are perhaps the single biggest cause of this vulnerability because they were "toxic parents" long before they became toxic-in-laws. If you even suspect this to be the case in your marriage use this book as guide to fix it immediately because, trust me, left challenged, they can have devastating consequences.

Excellent and helpful book. I'm a grandmother so I bought it to avoid being the toxic in-law. Good advice on dealing with difficult family members without starting a World War. Also good way to analyze your own response and whether it is helping or hurtung.Has the added benefit of being short and to the point.

Susan Forward's books are always well written and this one is no exception. You'll recognize some of your in-laws if there's dysfunction in the family you married into and be offered ways to disengage effectively so their impact on your life is minimized.

This book has been helping my marriage it's absolutely a lifesaver. My husband now is starting to see how toxic his parents are thank God. It's a must buy .

Really good book. Will not help you fix your relationship but definitely explain and help you deal with the situation. It's more a "how to survive" than "how to fix" type of book.

Really great book. I bought this more for dealing with my sister in law, and its still applicable. I recommend this to anyone who has trouble understanding why their inlaws do what they do!

First I am an RN (an OLD RN) and to me modern Nursing began with Miss Nightingale. Prior to her works hospitals were a place to be feared. Nurses were women who were paid in Port Wine and worked 20 hour days carrying slop buckets and then delivering meal trays or changing bandages. Miss Nightingale along with Dr Ignaz Semmelweis on th emedical side,brought the simple idea of cleanliness equals health to the public. The simple act of hand washing and circulating air by opening windows made dramatic changes in a patient's chance of survival. Prior to that era doctors would go from autopsy to surgery to office hours and never wash their hands or change their bloody coat. (That's just nasty isn't it?)Now the younger Nurses I know say Miss Nightingale was old fashioned and something of a prude as it came to what a Nurse is. Well maybe so, but if it had not been for someone beginning a school to educate Professional Nurses there would not BE the career/calling/occupation of A NURSE for the past century or more. We don't wear aprons, don't wear caps, don't salute the doctors, but we DO make all the difference in patient care. Thank you Miss Nightingale for being A NURSE!I downloaded this as a free book, but just as well would have paid for a hard copy as it is a classic beauty in my opinion.

This is a classic and I recommend that it be read by all nurses. Nightingale was a pioneer. She established the dignity and importance of educated nursing care for the care of the sick -- and for the health of the community. While it may seem quaint at some points, the importance of her basic insistence on sanitation cannot be over emphasized. It was a new idea in Victorian England! It remains very important in modern health care with the rise of super infections which resist antibiotics. Note: The first antibiotic was not available to health care of that era -- the first antibiotic was penicillin, used initially to treat sypillis in soldiers during WW II.

Remember, clean the bedpan after every use. Once a day is not often enough. Open a window so you patient doesn't smother in the stink.Did someone really have to tell us these things? Yes, someone did. And Florence did so, in a clear and precise manner with a touch of wit. I wish more people knew of her insight and wit, which survives to this day. On women's dress in the Victorian age she says, "the dress of women is daily more and more unfitting them for any mission or usefulness." and then jokes, "every woman now either shuffles or waddles" from all the crinoline and lace. In regards to visitors she advises nurses that the patient should not be surprised "except by thieves."And yet there are other gems here that modern nurses will see as well, like informing her readers that it is rude to talk to the doctor about them in their hearing or that you should sit and not appeared rushed when patients need to talk.

Much of what is contained in this book will be recognized by nurses today. The need for sanitation, healthy food, and plain common sense is relevant today. Without Florence Nightingale nursing would not be the respected profession it is today. I referenced this book several times when writing papers for my BSN and MSN. Miss Nightingale was also a statistician whose work is still recognized today. She put her statistical data to use in convincing those in power that reforms in healthcare needed to take place. Miss Nightingale could have, with her large private income, lived in the lap of luxury but instead went to the Crimea and provided care to those in great need. That experience is the basis for the nursing care we provide today.

I know this is a classic piece of nursing history and Florence certainly doesn't need my approval - she has already endured. But the format of this version is easy to read and follow. I liked that part a lot.I read this as a requirement for a class, but in the end, wondered why I had never read it before that? The class drew comparisons between then and now - and that made it extremely interesting to read.Anyone in the medical field should read this at least once.The language might put some off (Florence didn't speak modern English of course), but the reasonably intelligent can get through the language from long ago just fine. I enjoyed that challenge. It's a short read if the challenge of the language puts anyone off.

As a retired nurse (anesthetist), I found this book fascinating. Nurses were expected to do so much for patients with so little formal education, and "medical men", saw little value in nurses being educated. Florence Nightingale emphasized a strict role for nurses, with all medical issues to be left to the doctor 's discretion. At the same time, she promotes the idea of tracing nurses so they will be more useful both to patients and doctors. of course nurses were always women! Doctors are referred to as "medical men"! So much has changed!

As a Registered Nurse for over 26 years, I have never read this work before. It was free on Kindle and came highly recommended. What a wonderful glimpse of the foundations of nursing. Although it can be viewed as a historical text, it also is fine contemporary reading. As nurses, we become so focused on the science and technology,(and dare I say, overrun by the weight of our workloads and liability that comes with it) the ability to "minister" to the human being before us is lost.. daily barriers prevent us from providing the "care" that is fundamental. Interventions such as light, fresh air, sleep and comfort and "quieting of the mind from excessive worry" are not just interventions to be used in the absence of technology but as an important adjunct to it. Also in the spirit of taking care of ourselves, this work contains valuable insights for us as well. Elegant historical prose is refreshing. She was indeed a wise visionary. As I was reading, I wondered what she would say about nursing today...

After buying and reading the book - I feel that this age range (stated on amazon.com as 8 and up) is off and that the book is better suited to older readers - I would say at least 10 and up, maybe 12. This is because book covers various sensitive subjects including: suicide, sexual predators online and at the mall, and being pressured to go to boy/girl parties and play games like spin the bottle and truth or dare.It's important to note that these sensitive topics are covered in (what I consider to be) a careless way. For example, the suicide issue comes up early in the book under "nosy questions." For me, this was really a problem - my young reader wasn't familiar with the term and had questions about it that I'd rather have waited to deal with. It was so very stupid to include this question because, seriously, under "nosy questions" there were a hundred other topics they could have used there and to bring up suicide in a book rated for 8 and up was way off the mark.Beyond this, I felt that there were a number of other, similar, issues - as listed above. I felt that these topics were not essential to the topic of good manners and did not need to be included here. They would have been better in a book for older kids and also in a book on different topics - maybe they need to write a smart guide to starting to date or a smart guide to staying safe online and at the mall; overall, I just didn't feel they were necessary to learn about good manners or that they were age appropriate for 8 year olds.

Very good book. With all AG books we read the them before we have our daughter read them. This had very good content, was super helpful and very practical. Our daughter loved the quizzes. I agree with some other reviewers that some sections were inapplicable for an 8 year old, namely a section on what to do if you're at a party and everyone decides to play "spin the bottle."

My granddaughter reports that these newer American Girl books are better :). Better pictures, she says. My daughter says she has been reading this one faithfully. Good manners are never out of place and this grandmother is glad for any opportunity to reinforce them. Parents have so many admonishments as well as lessons that sometimes getting the information from a source of this type makes a bigger impression than you'd think. The child takes it in at her own pace when she's in the mood to learn. Highly recommended.

My daughter is ten going on eleven and this is a nice way to give her some reminders with out working to hard or being overbearing. She really seemed to enjoy reading it and sharing points from this book with me and the family. She's a fairly mature tween so I didn't know if she would think this book was silly but she seems to really like it. Actually so far everything she has gotten from this series she has loved.

I love the smart girl's guide books, but I would recommend "Smart Girls Guide to Knowing What to Say" over this one. This one was a tad too wordy on the pages and I know my daughter lost some of the info that way.

Very impressed with the book. We have learned a lot. Daughter has learned how to set the table and what is polite and what is rude. This is so important given that kids are not taught manners these days. I really recommend it. My 7 year old loves it and refers to it often.

This little book is great for knowing what's appropriate to say in different circumstances. It helps avoid misunderstandings due to well-meaning, but not appropriate responses (an example being "At least they're in a better place" when someone passes away. This may not be the best thing to say to someone who is grieving). There's many other examples in this book.

We enjoy the American girl series. We have several different ones, this one in particular.My daughter to keeps them in her room...she enjoys them and often times they open up conversation without my having to pepper her.

Electronic Communication Systems: A Complete Course, Fourth Edition, addresses the variety, reality, complexity, and pervasiveness of today's communications systems. Our world is linked by often instantaneous voice, video, message, and data paths, and these links are getting faster, more complex, and more complete every day; many people are jaded even when they are presented with live photos and scientific data transmitted from other planets in our solar system. At the same time, existing communication systems such as the basic telephone and television continue to have a major role in setting standards for system behavior and compliance. New technologies such as network processors and Internet protocol are applied to older systems to improve performance, lower cost, and enhance features. Engineers and technicians now deal with communication systems in three very different ways than they did even just a few years ago: Digital techniques and signals are used in nearly all new designs and systems, yet analog issues and characteristics continue to be an inherent and unavoidable part of the system design and challenge. Systems use sophisticated processors and software to implement signal- and data-processing algorithms and embed flexible functionality, making high-speed, low-error links practical and robust. Integrated circuits, which provide complete system functions on a single encased component with software-defined parameters, have largely supplanted circuitry that required many discrete support components, while also reducing overall size, cost, and power consumption. The fourth edition builds on the new topics of the previous editions by adding or expanding on numerous topics, including fiber optics, optical amplifiers, and wavelength-division multiplexing; new buses and interconnection standards such as CAN bus; Internet Protocol and Voice over Internet Protocol; channel simulators and wireless noise characteristics; the short-range Bluetooth wireless standard; smart antennas for cellular systems; cell phone architectures that are primarily digital, using undersampling and oversampling; and the updated electromagnetic spectrum assignments. As part of the revision for the fourth edition, the entire book was reviewed, with extensive expansion and adjustment, especially in the application chapters. The sections on networks, cellular systems, wireless and wired systems, and fiber optics were reevaluated in light of the enormous and rapidly accelerating changes that have occurred in these areas in just a few years. The fundamentals of spectrum, modulation, transmitters, receivers, cables, antennas, and digital concepts are covered as before. Over half the book is devoted to applications such as video, telephones, standard and DSL modems, RS-232 (and similar), cellular systems, networks, radar, Ethernet, the Internet and the World Wide Web, wired and wireless systems, satellites, Bluetooth, the Global Positioning System, and fiber optics. For each application, we look at what it accomplishes, how it does this, the functional blocks and components it uses, what limitations it has, and what constraints and tradeoffs shape the application. Where standards define performance, we look at what the standard defines and why, as well as what it leaves open and where its often-deliberate gaps are. We also admit that in many cases, communications systems overlap, cooperate, and even compete with each other; for the long-term, some implementations will survive and others may not—only time and the market will tell. Further, this edition addresses the important role of simulation in systems planning and analysis. In parallel with ICs as system-level building blocks, today's designers and technicians develop and understand systems and tradeoffs using software-based simulation tools which model communication functions at the block-diagram level, and then exercise these models in a simulation mode. This book includes a CD-ROM which contains a highly regarded, powerful, yet easy-to-use simulation package called SystemView by Elanix. With this software running on a PC, the student can quickly see, for example, how changing the filter bandwidth in the receiving-path front end affects the final bit error rate, regardless of the specific circuits used to build the system. In-Text Learning Aids Electronic Communication Systems: A Complete Course, Fourth Edition, was designed with the beginning student in mind. Each chapter opens with Chapter Objectives contained in a color box and an Introduction. Review Questions follow each chapter section and serve to reinforce what the student has just learned. Armstrong (1890-1954) conceived, analyzed, produced, and perfected several major innovations. Two of these—the superheterodyne receiver and FM transmission—are still vital to communications systems in this advanced age of digital electronics, microprocessors, and ICs; his first invention—the regenerative amplifier—allowed vacuum tubes in amplifiers to have much greater effective gain for weak signals (although subsequent developments have made it obsolete). Book is very old, some pages are impossible to read, was supposed to be book + CD, however CD didn't come. I'm very frustrated and I want my money back!!!!
