Her essays about the less photogenic moments of her life contain their own sort of beauty, the kind that comes from failing and persevering. From breaking down her anxiety disorder to getting in touch with helpful and well-deserved female rage, Donahue is as inspiring as she is droll.†― Vulture

This was the most pointless book I've ever read. It felt like reading a book of someone's complaints about not having life handed to them on a silver platter. She had to work for things, she made choices she wouldn't make again and made mistakes and now here she is with a book. The title is so true - Nobody Cares. She didn't overcome any significant or meaningful challenges. This was a pick for one of my book clubs and I am the only person that finished the book. A few others asked if they should power through and I had to honestly tell them I am upset that I used my time that way and I can never get that time back. I'm baffled by the glowing reviews and feel like they read a different book.
I've been reading Anne's writing for years, and her first book, NOBODY CARES, is perhaps the perfect culmination of her writing to date full of hilarious rants and painfully honest introspection. Her writing always reads like that one best friend who will tell you the absolute truth no matter what while being incredibly funny (before forcing you to go to drown your sorrows in Red Lobster cheddar biscuits). I was particularly taken with her chapters about her relationship with Catholicism/Tarot and her sobriety both which acknowledge hard truths about herself while managing to be relatable and moving. NOBODY CARES is, like most memoirs, about a woman coming to terms with herself and who she wants to be. Anne may think nobody cares, but after reading her delightful debut, it's impossible not to care about her.
Anne T. Donahue has always had a way with words. Of course she's hilarious, but she's also poignant and writes in a way that is very much her own while welcoming everyone else to sit down with her. Through grief and pain, mental health and addiction, dating and Leonardo DiCaprio, everything Anne discusses in this book is approachable and reassuring. "Nobody cares" is a great motto, an excellent book, and a really nice gift for pretty much anyone in your life. I definitely recommend.
Anne has written a series of essays that inspire and relate. It's, more than anything, like having a friend whisper in your ear while simultaneously reading your thoughts. When she isn't reading you for filth (but, like, in a nice way), she's relating absolutely BATSHIT coming-of-age tales that are so utterly revealing that you can't help but be hooked.
I just get really happy when they finally let her shopIt’s also really funny and has meaningful life advice, and she talks about ghosts and stuff. I mean what more do you need
Good book - easy read - very funny and relatable
*I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley, with thanks to the author and publishers. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*Anne T. Donahue has laid her soul bare to the world in this book.Nobody Cares is witty, raw and honest. At times it is a memoir, telling anecdotes from the author’s past to explain her attitudes to family and relationships, death and growing-up. At other times the essays are directly addressed to the reader (yes, you!) and form more of a self-help narrative or intimate pep talk, as she lists her own perceived failings and reassures us that we are not alone in ours. The essays here cover a multitude of topics, from mental health and addiction, relationships and growing-up, feminism, religion, family, death and grief. Every story, every piece of advice is offered in intimate, conversational style, and the author generously shares tips and insight from her own experiences, counselling sessions and personal ‘aha moments’.There is some repetition or overlap between some of the anecdotes, but they are told differently, in order to illustrate different points, so this does not detract from the book as a whole. This book is about being a hot mess, but that actually that is alright, because we are all (or most of us, at least) hot and messy in our own ways, and whilst there are ways to become metaphorically cooler and tidier, it is really up to us what we do and how we muddle through. It is a paean to self-love and self-care without any condescension or po-faced lecturing, and I recommend it to everyone who feels they need a concerned friend to tell them it like it is.And for the first time in years, I didn’t give a [] about being important.Which is a relief, because I’m not. None of us are. Nobody’s looking at us, nobody cares – everybody’s obsessed with their own Thing. Most of the time we’re all just trying our best. And sometimes we fall and other times we don’t, but we’re sure as [] not better than anybody else before or after the fact. If you can look at your life and feel confident that you’re doing something you love and giving it all you’ve got, I think that’s enough. Especially since not even a tidal wave of third-party congratulations will make you feel better if you don’t already like where you’re at. No amount of RSVPs, no parties, no Cool Guys From Whatever City Is Hip Right Now’s adulations. No book deals. You are always left with being yourself.– Anne T.
