About the Author
April Ryan has been a White House correspondent for the American Urban Radio Networks since the Clinton administration. In addition she can be seen almost daily as a political analyst for CNN. She has been featured in Vogue, Cosmopolitan, and Elle magazines as well as the New York Times, Washington Post, and Politico, to name a few, and has appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Anderson Cooper 360, Hardball, Meet the Press, and many other television news programs. She is the 2017 National Association of Black Journalists Journalist of the Year. She is also a 2019 Freedom of the Press Award Winner for 2019 by The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. Ryan resides in Baltimore, Maryland.

There are not that many men and women who become legends in journalism. She is the White House corresponded that makes news as often as the people she covers. She is a brilliant reporter who is often seen on cable news explaining how the people in Washington are trying to hide from the truth. Her story is a treasure. You will feel at home with her warm insight into what prepared her for this tough challenge. I just ordered Fear by Bob Woodward. I would love to see a book co-authored by both of these incredible people. This is the time of the year you might want to buy one for yuurself and make a gift to friends and family. If you see one starred reviews, you know she hit a raw nerve with the people supporting Trump. Make sure to Google her online and see the interviews she has had with all the cable stations. look for the interchange she had with Donald Trump. He asked her to set up a meeting with the Black Caucus. In a few days the Head of the Black Caucus sent a letter to Trump saying he never answered their request for a meeting. This is the book you want to read.
This book gives you the dirty tricks of Trump and Co. in a way that gets you as close as you can without a camera or recorder. Trump's White House is attacking the Press like dictators and wannabe dictators. April Ryan tells it like it happened because SHE WAS THERE! The book is well-written and you will find out why it's terrible to make the Press the enemy of the people. Buy it! Read it! Lend to your friends!
Definitely my favorite Trump WH book so far, and I’ve read the quite a few, including all of the ones that had big PR campaigns. It isn’t a “tell-all,â€It’s her story. Yet I got lots of new info and insight into behind the scenes as well. And her experiences and perspective are super interesting.She writes like a person, a friend, talking to you, like a real person not someone trying to be formal to fit someone else’s idea of what’s proper. Lots of !!! That may be part of what she meant when she thanked the editors for letter her do it her way. It’s really engaging and charming and the first behind the scenes book I’ve read that actually gives me tons of new info.
I’ve watched April Ryan on televised White House press briefings and as a journalist on news programs. I was eager to read what she had to say about the Trump White House. Under Fire: Reporting from the Front Lines of the Trump White House provided insight into her experiences with the Trump White House and the assortment of Press Secretaries who have battled with the press in Trump’s name. I’d seen many of the confrontations she had with Sean Spicer, Sarah Sanders, and even Trump. Ryan’s book reveals a conscientious journalist who manages to remain polite and respectful even when she is treated rudely. She states she never expected or wanted to become the focus of a news story. But the unprecedented behavior of the forty-fifth president and his representatives made that happen. I was watching the press conference the day Trump asked Ryan if she could set up a meeting with the Black Congressional Caucus. I was as shocked as she was by what was obviously a racist question. Trump’s assumption that because Ryan is an African American she would have some sort of “in†with the Caucus gives some insight into Trump’s personality. This is another example of racist remarks he has made throughout his presidency.Throughout the book, Ryan represents herself as a woman of color dealing with a president who is racist and an administration who not only accepts it but in some cases seems to encourage it. On more than one occasion Trump has spoken derogatorily to women, people of color, and members of the press who disagree with him or ask uncomfortable questions. Ryan falls into all those categories and as such has come under fire from both Trump and his press secretaries.Understand, this book is primarily about Ryan’s experiences with Trump. She also reveals her feelings about her struggles as a divorced mother of two girls who has been threatened by Trump’s unstable followers. A journalist of high acclaim, recognized by various prominent groups, she had to question whether she should continue in a career she loved or simply pack it in and go home. Ryan’s integrity and devotion to the truth provides a solid foundation to stand up against the falsehoods that regularly come from the White House.
