Dr. Welsh brings her years as a licensed clinical psychotherapist to this wonderful thought guiding journal. I made a point to photograph and share a handful of images with you from the journal to give you a taste of the varied layout used to enrich this journal without sharing so many as to impinge on her Intellectual Property.Some parts start with an inspiring thought, prompting for positivity and inviting us to write out on a lined page of the journal.Other pages are more like a beautiful tag cloud of positive attributes. We can both circle them and I would add writing some out onto post it notes in fun colors and shapes to put in the journal or bring the journal out into my physical life by posting a few on the bathroom mirror as unconscious mind shaping and conscious mind reminders for goodness, happiness, and positivity.Some pages invite us to write out affirmations. Personally, I’ll need way more pages on that topic! I think with the layout, I could easily tuck in loose sheets of lined notebook paper to do that.Some pages are specific prompts for a particular reflection or action which instills a positive outlook perspective on the user and reader of the journal.The colors are likely to appeal a bit more to women their being pretty pastels.I like the inclusion of the minimalist illustrations sprinkled throughout this guided journal: a beautiful picture facing an inspiring quotation, a shiny picture of a sun. The images are almost childlike in their appearance, inviting us to attempt a few scribbles and doodles as well which are another way to be happy and positive as well as creative in our lives.The layout and format subtly invite us to flip through the pages and actually fill it out at whim by what moves for the day, not necessarily in a linear manner starting from the left and going right page by page only. There are quotes sprinkled through this book that to me were great and perfect for the material that was being discussed.So how do you go about turning a bad day into a good day?This journal has nicely placed quotes before each section. Afterward you will have exercises such as:-write down 10 things you are grateful for right now-These are a few of my favorite things-What I love about my life-What I love about myself-Write about something that made you laugh this weekThrough this book, and a great portion of this book, you will find topics like this and then empty space below for you to write about the topic or question on hand.This is basically the book as a whole. It is a chance for you to write about the good things in your life, things that are good about yourself and your life.The questions are to the point which will make you think for a moment how to reply.This is a really lovely little journal that one can use to start as the title of the book says “getting to good” in hope there are more good days ahead than bad. I'm not normally a big fan of guided journals and I will admit, I'm only a few days into this one, but so far I'm really impressed! Author, Elena Welsh, is a psychologist who has worked with those suffering from trauma, depression, and anxiety. She's put together some of her best practices and writing prompts in this gorgeous little journal that readers can fill in their thoughts and fears and work on "getting to good." I'm not depressed or suffering from trauma, I am however, a very anxious person who suffers from fomo (fear of missing out) and over scheduling. Getting to Good is about finding your happy place and learning to "rewrite bad days into good ones." The journal includes:prompts, gorgeous illustrations, motivational quotes, and strategies that can be easily implemented into the readers life. A solid investment and one that I look forward to finishing!

I am a huge hockey fan and had a chance to see Gordie Howe play at the end of his career. I wanted to read his book after reading Derek Sanderson's and Bobby Orr's books. Sanderson's book was a lot of hyperbole but fun, Orr's book was dull as watching paint dry. Mr. Hockey on the other hand was a delight. Gordie's description of his childhood during the depression brought out a sense of reality and pathos but ultimately some hope. His thoughts about the people of Saskatoon helping each other and ultimately helping him succeed rang true and lacked the disingenuous feel of so many other biographies. Howe is real and as he gets into his hockey life and career I am reminded of a mix of two movies "Slapshot" and "Young Blood". There is just something about the inside world of hockey that enthralls hockey fans. And yet Howe's writing reaches beyond that. He is Detroit of the Golden years,40's, 50's, 60's. And so much of his hockey is from the Golden years of 6 teams and rivalries that mattered. It's not what we have now, I can't get excited about Nashville playing Tampa Bay. But the strength of the book resounds with the importance of family. Gordie Howe playing on the same line with his sons is unprecedented in any sport and it is priceless. Hockey fan or not Mr. Hockey won't disappoint.

This is the first hockey book I have ever read and I struck gold. Naturally I have been familiar with Gordie Howe's accomplishments with the Detroit Red Wings and have heard of several of the players mentioned in the book but I wouldn't know a red line from a blue line. Gordie Howe had the distinction of playing professional hockey in five different decades from the 1940s and into 1980 and his reason for being able to accomplish this fete is due to his love for the game.Howe mentions his feelings of family that the Red Wings' franchise promoted and he bought into but found this not to be true as far as ownership relationships with its players were concerned. Howe relates his philosophy in dealing with opposing players on the ice and dealing with retribution whenever necessary.A special thrill for Gordie Howe took place when he joined the Houston Aeros of the WHA and teamed up his two of his sons, Mark and Marty, for four seasons. He concluded his career with two seasons with the New England Whalers of the WHA and the Hartford Whalers of the NHL. The last chapter is written by his three sons and daughter in which they relate the death of their mother and the trials and tribulations that their father has now been experiencing. As I write this Gordie Howe has since suffered a stroke and remains in critical condition. I am not a hockey fan but I chose well in purchasing this book and adding it to my ever-growing library. I'm sure you will enjoy it as well.

Growing up in a suburb of Detroit in 1940-50 and a sports enthusiast, I watched Gordie Howe many times in the old Olympia stadium. When I saw this book on the list, there was no hesitation in buying it. Like most sport's people I knew a lot about the games. Now I have learned more about the person. No one who follows hockey will ever forget this person. One of my favorite memories was of one of his fights. Gordie had been picked on all night but never to the degree of the other player getting a penalty. About the middle of the third period Gordie and the other player ended up in the corner of the rink. Gordie proceeded to teach the other player to not do what he was doing to him. The officials took about 30-45 seconds to go to the scorers table to check on something. After a short time they returned to break up the one-sided fight. Gordie never had a problem with this player again.. I have been following his fight with his health these last few weeks and hope only the best for him. A must read for any hockey or sports enthusiast. Ed

I've read several biographies by great NHL players, but this is my favorite so far. I've never been a Red Wings fan, but I've always been pretty impressed with Gordie Howe's longevity and his place in the record books. After reading the first few pages of this book, I was hooked. Mr. Howe was not only a sensational player, the like of whom we will likely never see again, but he is a tremendous inspiration to people who strive to make a better life for themselves. What stood out the most to me wasn't all the records or the fights or the hockey stories. It was the deep and genuine sense of gratitude that Gordie displayed throughout the book. I was also impressed by how he acknowledged his mistakes and presented them in such a humble and compelling fashion. God Bless Gordie Howe.

As a Flyers fan I always knew of Gordie Howe, but never really knew who he was exactly. That is until I read his book. Everything from his Childhood working and helping his parents in Canada, the long train rides between cities, to his return in Houston playing with his two sons. As a lover of Hockey I really enjoyed this book. Detroit is lucky to have a ledged such as Gordie.

Growing up in the Chicago area the 1960s, my heroes were Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita. But Gordie Howe eclipsed everybody. His story is compelling, especially his young years when he played for the fun of it whenever he could. Through a couple summers at Tam O'Shanter Summer Hockey School, I was taught by other players, so I never got a chance to meet him.His story is a great chronicle of the early years of the NHL and its growth from the original six. If you love hockey, do yourself a favor and read it.

Gordie Howe was my hero when I was growing and is my hero today. His story is important because it is a blueprint for how to live a life is rewarding and inspirational. The book is about more than a hockey career. It is a story about what it takes to be successful while remaining humble and generous. By the end, you realize that the story of Gordie is more about being a great human being than a great hockey player. I was fortunate enough to meet and spend time with Gordie on several occasions. He was always kind and respectful. He treated everyone as if they were special. The book was so well-written that I couldn't put it down and finished it in almost one sitting. I highly recommend it.

On a scale from 1-5, my 7-year old gives this “one hundred million gazillion.” Got it yesterday on pre-order, and my only “complaint” is that he didn’t want to go to bed because he wanted to keep reading, and he didn’t want to get dressed for school because he wanted to keep reading.

The "Dogman" comic books are supposedly written by Harold and George, who are themselves the main characters in Dave Pilkey's "Captain Underpants" series of graphic novels. So we already have a weird sort of meta issue going on before we even start reading.Here's the thing. I read and review lots of children's books, because I like and admire them, and I often find them better written and more interesting, (from a lot of perspectives), than adult literary works. (I'll take Daniel Pinkwater over Ian McEwan any day of the week.) But these Pilkey books resist being reviewed or described. They are antic and often very silly, even cartoonish. They also touch on deeper themes that are often overlooked in children's lit. Admirably, they are scalable, in the sense that there are jokes and delights for the youngest readers and yet also sly and deadpan humor for older readers. (A robot in this book has "Grape Nuts & Bolts" for breakfast. That's a sneaky funny throwaway for older readers, I would think. The subtitle for this book is a joke on "Lord of the Flies", which older readers will/might get and yet which won't derail younger readers.)But here's the main takeaway. Every one of my grandsons has a couple of "Underpants" books and some "Dogman" books. They pick them up at school book sales, the library, on bookstore trips, or they trade with friends. The books are on the family room floor, in the bathrooms, in their backpacks, on their desks, and on the floor of the van. This one I got for one grandson because it was the latest and he just couldn't wait for his turn at the library. Something is going on here.Bottom line? -- Since the books are funny, good humored, naughty in only the mildest of ways, and erratically independent, and since the kids love them wholeheartedly, I say "you bet!".

As a teacher I have yet to come around embracing Captain Underpants but Dog Man is actually quite funny. My 3rd grader adores the books and we ordered this one as soon as we knew it'd be out. He read it within one sitting and keeps re-reading it. When I asked him what he liked about the book her said, "The author introduces new characters and the book also has a dinosaur in it." He thinks it is funny and it makes my heart smile when I hear him chuckle and say "Mom, you have to listen to this!" and he actually reads it aloud to me. This is why teachers teach - to witness the light bulb moments and reading enthusiasm when children find books that capture them. Well, this Dog Man is definitely one that captures readers ;)

I was so glad I preordered this book. My son was very excited to get it and has already read it 5 times. He took it to school and said he had to bring it home because too many people were asking him to look at it, and he didn't want it to get ruined. LOL

My first grader was hesitant about reading chapter books. The Dog Man series has turned him into a lover of reading. Even after reading through the series, he continues to read some of a Dog Man book every night. The content is perfect for boys. Get your kiddo reading with these books and then into some complex text.

I like this book because it was funny! (Like all the other Dog Man books!!!!) There are 3 new villans, Piggy, Crunky and Bub. But will Petey decide to be good or not? And will Lil' Petey keep telling those awful jokes about poop?Read the book to find out!

It was short with not the best storyline. I wish it was longer. Probably not the best book to read

I’m not too keen on the graphic novel style books for my second grader, however he loves them! In spite of the few grammatical and spelling errors (on purpose), I enjoy reading these books with him. Even though they are comic style, they’re still over 100 pages each and he has every book from the series and has read them multiple times. Reading is reading, right?

Well written book with good illustrations, historical data, figurine date as well as all Royal Copenhagen porcelain. Very useful for the collector or appraiser.

I ordered this book because of the fact it dealt with figurines. There are a lot of Royal Copenhagen figurine pictures with only a small amount of information, but pretty comprehensive on backstamps used and dates of figurines. Also discusses several of the more famous artists that work on these items. I found it quite interesting and a must have if you are an ardent collector.

It was disappointing not to find a piece of dinnerware. That information was what I was looking for. Strange it was totally ignored. No info available.

This book is really only about figurines, with a little history of the company markings. It does not cover any dishes or accent pieces for the china collector. The product description may lead you to think it covers it all, but it doesn't.

Some technical info from Ismay and the crew regarding the power plant and watertight compartments on the Titanic as well as some of the procedures common to trans-Atlantic steamship travel was new to me and I've read a great deal about the Titanic.It's very interesting to note how events were interpreted differently by different passengers and crew. For instance, some high ranking officers insisted the ship did not break up while sinking.The lack of emotional testimony is remarkable as is the formality of the responses. And the proximity of the SS Californian, Why didn't she come to the rescue, is an enduring controversy.Having read this, I'd like to read a more in-depth account of the New York and London inquiries into the tragedy. But this book is a very good intro and, again, I think all who are interested in the Titanic story will enjoy the readd.

When you read the actual testimony of the crew and survivors, you have the true perspective, not only on the events themselves, but on the real life details of the ship and its day to day function. These people weren't recreating through some sort of fictional construct; they were recounting without artifice their world as they knew it. This is the stuff that those of us who are fascinated by the Titanic story really want to know.I kept thinking as I read this book that this would make a great stage production. There are several "characters" that stand out as exceptional roles. A great exchange takes place between a group of lifeboat passengers and a Quartermaster named Robert Hitchens. A passenger named Ella White makes a wonderful, indignant speech. Fifth Officer Harold Lowe makes a strong impression. Of course, the Duff Gordons are fun.Anyway, good reading. I recommend it. And a Titanic mystery: 4 explosions were testified to by survivors, but the experts say they could not have been caused by exploding boilers. So what was the cause?

I absolutely love this book! Very finely detailed compared to the one I purchased from the Titanic Historical Society, here in the U.S. IF you are an admirer of the Titanic, and wanted to learn the facts in their investigation, hetre in the U.S. Then as a matter of closure, this might be just what you need! Well worth the money! And, it doesn't weigh 3 pounds! Very well documented because my great grandmother known as the "Rose" , left me some heirlooms. And her written views!! Again, THANK YOU AMAZON!! This book was great for those that enjoy reading about the history of events. Written from the testimonies of the survivors of the sinking of the titanic it tells the tale of the fateful trip from the start to after all were rescued. Also includes excerpts of the findings from the trail that was held afterwards. A very interesting read and would recommend to all because it is the account of the actual passengers, employees and rescuers it is easy to read and does not over load you with actual fcts.

It clearly presents what really happened. Lots of good information about early shipboard radio stations and life aboard the ship.

My heart burst with joy on August 1 as I heard Michael Twitty interviewed on a public radio show. I have been blessed to follow his journey through the first Discomfort Tour and learn as he shared his knowledge through his blog at AfroCulinaria. But this book is so much more than what any one article, any one blog post, any one standing up for what is right moment can be.The Cooking Gene repositions the conversation about race in America through its food history. Slavery is an incredibly difficult subject to address, much less understand. How can people subject other people to unspeakable cruelty? One element that distinguished the Transatlantic Slave Trade from other types of slavery throughout time is that the enslavers actively stripped the enslaved people of their identities and connections to their homelands.But as Michael so adeptly realized through his interest in both history and food is that you can't strip away how people cook. So, the victims of the Transatlantic Slave Trade retained their cooking techniques and shared them with others. Over time their foodways became our foodways. But even though his enslaved ancestors couldn't pass down their cultural identities as my Ashkenazi Jewish ancestors could, they passed down their foodways to him along with their actual DNA.The Cooking Gene is a book to be cherished but also one to be digested. Thank you Michael for taking the journey as uncomfortable as it may have been at times. Discomfort has lead to a beautiful piece of art.

I just finished reading The Cooking Gene by Michael Twitty. This book is nothing short of a declaration of truth on so many levels. It is about Twitty's life and him coming into his own, about all the ancestors who contributed to his DNA, and about the cultural transfers of food that came with the arrival of our African ancestors to this country. Twitty gives a thorough breakdown of what foods Africans brought to country and what foods they incorporated into their cuisine from both Native-Americans and Europeans . He rightly pays tribute to all the African-American chefs who came before him and puts the spotlight on them which is where it should be in terms of Southern cooking. In an era where American politics is dividing people, The Cooking Gene gives the reader a glimpse of a better America where everyone can have a seat at the table of culinary history and more. I applaud him for speaking his own truth to power and in honoring his ancestors and mine in the process.

I ordered this after listening to an NPR interview with the author, on what turned out to be the day of its release. The book arrived the next day. What I have read so far is really interesting (I'm a non-fiction person who enjoys reading about history / people / culture, and also loves to cook). I was hoping for more photographs and recipes than there are (there are just a few pages of photos in the middle of the book, and recipes are intermittent throughout the text). It also would've been nice if a recipe index had been included at the front of the book (or even as subtext within the table of contents), hence the only 4 out of 5 stars. But overall I am enjoying the book a lot, and look forward to the rest of the read (as well as trying out the black eyed pea hummus, which sounds delicious, and as a vegetarian I appreciate it being included!).

The Cooking Gene is about food and about so much more than food. It is about history, and identity, and memory. It is about the complexity of the American present, about the hidden away memories in plain sight. Michael Twitty's poetic prose is mesmerizing; my copy arrived one day and I sat down with it, intending to skim. The cream of the text slowed me down and forced me to read one delicious paragraph after another. Hours later I had devoured the whole thing.This book is about holy healing work; it is about the memory in the kitchen. I recommend it without reservation.

I just started reading this book last night and fell into it pretty deeply. I could've kept going for a long time but had to stop because parts of it were making me hungry and I didn't want to finish it too quickly. This is a book to be savored. Twitty writes in gorgeous poetic prose that transports the reader to different historical moments and geographic spaces. I am not especially well versed in Southern history, and certainly not in its food histories, so I am learning a lot from this. The book is a unique blend of academic scholarship, food writing and memoir. Those are all categories that I enjoy anyway but I rarely see them combined into one work and elegantly at that. I highly recommend it.
