Well-written and fascinating look at the real Hans Christian Andersen. His life would make a very interesting movie - it's almost a shame that the Danny Kaye movie that bears his name is so full of falsehoods and creative liberties. I think the real Hans Christian Andersen must have been a very strange creature to know and observe and understand. What a flawed and fascinating personality he had!

There are three Hans Christian Andersen biographies on the market: by Alison Prince (1998), Jackie Wullschlager (2000), and Jens Andersen (no relation -- 2004).The later is the weakest, because the author is hesitant to reveal too much about Andersen's personal life. Being Danish, he cannot ruffle too many feathers, since he still has to live with the descendants of these people! The other two are British...The Wullschlager biography takes a Freudian approach -- quite revealing as to Andersen's sex life, and ties in the major events of his life to his fairy tales and stories. It does an excellent job in both those areas. The storyteller's friend!However, the most revealing of the three is the Prince -- it takes over where the Wullschlager left off. Andersen's homosexuality is a given, with the "politics" of oppression and repression well expressed. But it also presents the main events of his life in a brand new light: Andersen may not have been Mr and Mrs Andersen's little boy! A royal bastard, probably the son of the Crown Prince who later became king of Denmark. This sheds a whole new light on the "hidden" meaning of such masterpieces of Andersen's as THE UGLY DUCKLING!So please avoid the Andersen, read the Wullschlager first, then compare with the Prince -- it will be a thrilling experience in biography reading, I promise you!

Interesting man. I had read an earlier biography in the 80s which put Andersen on a pure pedestal and was almost as much a fairy tale as his stories. This one is warts and all, which not only humanizes Andersen but makes him all that more fascinating. Probably the definitive biography.

Given that, living in Europe during the 1800s must have been tedious for a man of Hans Christian Andersen's (b. 1805, d. 1875), passion and vision. In Andersen's case, writing became his way of transcending matter, of becoming timeless and immortal.Author Jackie Wullschlager writes a thoroughly researched biography of the quirky genius. While I loved this book, I gave it three stars because I completely disagree with her premise that Andersen was a "victim" of classism and elitism and that his work was inspired in opposition to this.Andersen pushed gender, sexual, social and artistic boundaries so effortlessly that I have to believe it was instinctive not contrived. Isn't it every artist's lament that they are misunderstood? And isn't it every biographer's urge to explain it for them? All artists share the very same yearnings, complications, misunderstandings, restlessness and even nuttiness that Andersen did.Quite simply there is no answer as to what informs any of their work. It just is. Mortals like us have to accept their magic gracefully. I certainly wish Wullschlager had.

Very interesting book and a good read--having heard of Andersen most of my life, it was good to read about him. The book lays to rest the image of Andersen created by Danny Kaye in the (albiet interesting) misleading musical version of Hans Christian's life. The book chronicles the master storyteller's incredible ambition and drive to make something of himself, despite his poverty-stricten background, and thoroughly examines the demons (both physical and psychological) that encompassed his life.

I thought this was a well-researched, well-written biography with excellent insight into Anderson and the events that formed his character.

From his lowly birth, son of an illiterate washerwoman, his early love of music and theatre, his shyness yet profound self-belief which prompted him to leave home to make his fortune in Copenhagen aged only 14, Wullschlager conducts us through his life.Despite his fairy tales and enjoyment of the company of children, Andersen was far from being merely the naive and child-like personality which some attributed to him. Using his diaries and accounts of those who knew him, the author shows his often depressive and difficult character, and his constant craving for approbation - "We are suffering a good deal from Andersen" wrote Charles Dickens when the latter came for a lengthy stay.Andersen's work (not just fairy tales but novels, plays, travel works, poetry, and latterly tales aimed at a more adult audience) are shaped by events in his life, and in exerpts from his writings Wullschlager points out the parallels between them.With a number of b/w photos of Andersen and important places and people in his life, this leaves the reader with a feeling that s/he knows and somewhat understands the writer. I purchased this book for a friend who is considering her future options in caring for her parents in their elderly years. It has greatly exceeded my expectations. From separate dwelling units, to additions and basement conversions, there are many options available for this type of housing, and this book covers them all. While you will certainly need to work with an architect to make these kinds of building projects a reality, the information covered here--questions on your neighborhood, discussions about the character of your lot or property and the potential benefits or pitfalls of various arrangements--will greatly assist you in making a thoughtful, measured assessment of the true possibilities of your property. The beautiful pictures of successful units will also leave you feeling inspired! And it will put you in a much more informed position, one that will greatly assist you in working with your architect--and I should know, as I am one! I highly recommend this book, and even plan to get another copy for myself.

We recently relocated back to the mid-atlantic region after being away for five years. My husband and I are retired and will be looking to buy a 'seasoned charmer' home in the next 2 years as opposed to a newer mcmansion with wasted space for two people. I saw this book reviewed in the Washington Post and since I have adult children with families in the immediate area, I was curious as to what options might be available in building a smaller space on an already inhabited residential lot. My advice to anyone contemplating this same option is 'don't pick up this book and start to explore it, anytime close to preparing a meal, unless you have a second cook in the house or you can order carryout.' It's mezmorizing in ideas, floor plans, before/after results pictures and makes you want to get in your car and start exploring the nearest town for available lots. I read it from cover to cover and kept interrupting my husband's activities to show him my latest 'what a great idea' find. I sent an email to a close friend in KC recommending this book to her since they are close to buying land and building a home and a MIL space with it. If you get this book, also get 'What Your Contractor Can't Tell You', as well. Equally as fabulous for information and getting to know the ins and outs of building or remodeling. Both books will be dog-eared worn out from referencing them in the near future.

I've purchased a handful of books on micro houses, prefab houses, green roofs, grey water systems, and house design in general. I would have been better if they had included a few more modest home remodels.95% are what I would call upper-middle class homes, and most of these projects look like they are intended for someone with a large budget.I on the other hand, was looking for more modest conversions, for a mobile home split, and a garage. If that's you, find another book.

I hesitated to purchase this book because it comes from Australia and I wasn't certain how relevant it would be to someone living in the USA. With that in mind I went to the library and checked a copy out. I needn't have worried, before I had done more than just look at the amazing variety of In-Law solutions I had my computer on and ordered my own copy. This is a great book with beautiful photographs of little places for "Granny" to live (or any one else for that matter). It shows how creative people can be when they need to make a complete, comfortable and attractive guest house or addition for whatever reason. Was it a help to me? Yes but now I have another problem....Granny-Flat envy! I highly recommend this book.

I was about 20% of the way through this book when I discovered that you can't really follow the examples anymore. The author did an excellent job of explaining SQLite basics and providing a good foundation for building an app, but the examples are built around Xamarin Studio. Microsoft purchased Xamarin several years ago. As part of that "merger" Microsoft did away with Xamarin Studio and put all of the functionality into Visual Studio. You can still download Xamarin studio (as of Jan. 2019) but it hasn't received any updates since May 2017 and will eventually cease to be functional. While I suppose you could use the almost deprecated Xamarin Studio to learn SQLite for Xamarin, it's really not a great learning method. It's a bit like practicing your culinary skills over a campfire when you're trying to learn to be a master chef. You can do it, but you're making things really hard for yourself.That said, the book is pretty good as far as I read. It does need a little editing and help from a proofreader, but it's clearly written by someone who is a good communicator and understands the subject matter. If the author would update this book to use Visual Studio instead of Xamarin Studio I'd give it five stars.

Covers database programming for mobile (Xamarin) in detail going into the specific issues that mobile developers face regarding SQLite programming. Fairly easy to follow with pretty good examples. Provides a really good base of knowledge. It does not cover general Xamarin programmin, this book is focused on database. Well worth the time.

I wanted to like this book. First, it is using an old version of Design Space, since the images are so tiny and blurry that you can't make them out with a magnifying glass. It doesn't matter. The first part of the book is very helpful. I would recommend it. The second part of the book says it is for intermediate or advanced tips. It is not that it is so advanced as much, as it leaves a lot out. It also doesn't make clear what layers you are working on. A you tube video helped me figure it out. Once I got to the folding card, I had to go to you tube. If the book was made bigger, so you could actually see and read the toolbar and the layers, the book would be way more usable. I wouldn't pass the book up, the first part will really get you on the way, just don't get the book for the second part and remember, it is an old version, so things look much different, especially in the layers area. That is the difficult thing with books, keeping up with software updates! The image is blurry, but that is about as good as you can see. It at least shows you how small the tool bar and layers are.I thought it was only fair to update my review as I used this book. I still say the images are just too small to understand what is going on, but as you work with Cricut and start learning, you look at your design space and can understand and follow along. There are some very simple steps, that seem monumental when you are starting out. I find I need a few reminders on certain things, like grouping text or how to prepare a project to "make it". This book is very very handy to have near for those reminders you need. I actually find that I use it quite frequently to check up on how I am doing things. Therefore because of not being able to see anything, I give it a 4. For how much use you will get out of this book, which is almost a manual, I do have to give it a 5. Use it, along with you tube, and you will get the hang of this fast!

This bundle takes you through the entire journey. If you are a complete newbie and want to master this software, then I think the bundle is really worth it. It has a lot of good info's and it's well explained

I was able to try these projects while reading the book and I feel a lot more confident in my ability to use design space.

I've had a Cricut for years and got frustrated at the simple things I didn't pay attention to. This book helped.

I paid 22.49 and the book came within three days, but it doesn't explain anything. it is a total waste of money. i was looking for some thing that explained in lenght, step by step.under letter e. text. it reads, this feature allows you to add any text you wan to your canvas. you can also choose the font for your text. it gives nothing other than that for an explanation. i want to know how to unlock that width and height. it doesn't tell you how to do that. it only lets you drag and move text. not resize your text to fit your canvas. totally angry and i do not know anymore than i did before i spend 22.49

I just got my new cricut. This book is perfect for the beginner. It will take you through all the basics. The second book will show you the advanced. It’s fantastic.

I had been looking forward to receiving this book since I pre-ordered it last fall and it does not disappoint. This is the local cookbook I have been waiting for! I have a big collection of cookbooks including several local cookbooks from Hawaii, and I can honestly say that this is the first cookbook where I want to make every single recipe. It is so well curated and the photography is so gorgeous. It would make a beautiful coffee table book, but it’s going to stay in the kitchen since I’ll be using it often. I’m definitely going to be buying more copies for gifts! The intro discusses regions of influence, the anatomy of a plate lunch, and how to build your local pantry. Too many recipes to mention but it includes all the local favorites from shoyu ahi poke and pork laulau to ginger misoyaki butterfish and pipi kaula. I am already planning on making the pork vinha d’alhos and papaya seed dressing this weekend but can’t wait to try the pohole fern salad and sweet potato haupia bars.

What a lovely cookbook of Hawaiian recipes! Everything from shoyu chicken to macaroni salad to guava cake. One of my fondest memories is being invited as a young child to join a local family for a lunch of beef teriyaki and white rice on the beach on Maui. This cookbook brings back those memories and more.

Not only does Aloha Kitchen provide a stunning array of approachable and wildly flavorful recipes, it’s also powerfully transportive. The photos are exquisite, the cultural history is profound, and the sum of the book provides a long-awaited education on the potent and delicious world of local Hawai’i cuisine. Wish I could buy a copy for everyone who lives in, has visited, or dreams about the islands.

I actually purchased the cookbook on a whim and I'm glad that I did! I had been following her blog for a while but this cookbook actually performs stronger than her blog in terms of the way the recipes are laid out and selected. The recipes are approachable and instructions are easy to follow. Photography is of course amazing (as one might have expected based on her blog). I'd highly recommend this book for anyone that doesn't even have to be an Island-food enthusiastic!

This cookbook captures so much about Hawaii- the confluence of so many cultures over the years, some history, the beauty, and a sense of place with the people.There are a lot of Hawaii cookbooks filled with Merriman's, et al, recipes, which are not accessible, contain rarefied ingredients, and are very touristy. Thankfully, Aloha Kitchen is NOT that kind of cookbook.So much love for this cookbook. Thank you, Alana.

Usually, I listen to audiobooks because I have epilepsy and reading requires that I struggle through an increased number of spells. Despite that a window opened and my family read the first three chapters to me and once hooked I couldn't wait to finish the rest on my own. I'm a HUGE fan of Cinderella stories and this was no disappointment, in the least. I enjoyed the differences, as this was not a straight up retelling, but loved the Cinderella-ness down to the core. The romance was sweet, 100% clean, and had me grinning like a fool throughout all of it- whether it be the emails or when they're actually together. I'd highly recommend this story for anyone who loves a funny and lovable teenage heroine who just needs a break once in awhile... and an awesome grandma who plays as her fairy godmother! I couldn't put this book down and that's the best review I can leave. *No cuss words and it's still an amazing book! Other authors should take note.

This book took me by surprise, as I really had no idea that this story was (loosely) based on Cinderella, and I only noticed about halfway through the book. I'm glad I went into it knowing basically nothing about the story, since I really loved every minute of it, and didn't keep comparing it to the fairy tale we all know.That said, this book was a lot more than just a contemporary Cinderella retelling. It a coming of age story about family, friendship, and moving out of your confort zone. I loved Tatum’s personality, she was so mature for her age, and was very loyal to the people she loved even after being betrayed by her best friend and unfairly punished by her family. She was also a very fun narrator, and her descriptions of her life and the people around her made me laugh. I also loved her resilience, and her dedication to her new graphic design business.My favorite part of the book however, was obviously the romance between Tatum and her mystery customer. He really was the modern version of a prince charming. Their relationship was adorable, and ther emails were so fun to read. I loved the way they met, and how perfect they were for each other from the very beginning. The ending was perfect too, there really needs to be more contemporaries like this one. My only complaint was that I wanted to see more of this couple being cute together. :)

This is a sweet and thoughtful YA romance you need for summer reading! Tatum takes on her "evil-stepmother" and a summer of house arrest and still wins the day. She's thoughtful with just the right amount of sass. I loved that Tatum's Cinderella story is not just a romance. She uses her brains and has great girlfriends - and can find time to flirt with a mysterious boy!

I must admit that I was at first hesitant about the book because the book description did not seem that appealing. But after reading the first two chapters, I found myself not being able to put the book down. I found Tatum to be witty and understandable with her own version of teenage angst, which thankfully was not overdone or drawn out to such an extent that I would find her annoying. I enjoyed seeing her relationships flourish with her step-sister and new friends (and a romantic interest!). Also, as a lover of the arts, I was delighted by all the music, art, and dance information.If you enjoy young adult literature, give this book a try.

This book was adorable and swoony and gave me all the good feels. The characters were fantastic and the Cinderella retelling near perfect. I loved every little thing about it.

Everyone loves a good Cinderella story, and this one hits the spot. It's a modern-day romance that isn't overdone or cheesy. Perfect for teens, tweens and adults!

Simply put, I adored this book. Tatum's struggles are believable and not too easily solved. Her relationship with her family is complicated and beautifully emotional. And Shay. Oh, Shay. He's the perfect combo of swoony and sweet!Highly recommend.
