Any Titanic buff will enjoy this book. The transcripts from passengers and crew are brief but telling. They are arranged so the comments track the chronology of the wreck; from the afternoon before striking the berg to the rescue by the Carpathia. Some technical info from Ismay and the crew regarding the power plant and watertight compartments on the Titanic as well as some of the procedures common to trans-Atlantic steamship travel was new to me and I've read a great deal about the Titanic.It's very interesting to note how events were interpreted differently by different passengers and crew. For instance, some high ranking officers insisted the ship did not break up while sinking.The lack of emotional testimony is remarkable as is the formality of the responses. And the proximity of the SS Californian, Why didn't she come to the rescue, is an enduring controversy.Having read this, I'd like to read a more in-depth account of the New York and London inquiries into the tragedy. But this book is a very good intro and, again, I think all who are interested in the Titanic story will enjoy the readd.

When you read the actual testimony of the crew and survivors, you have the true perspective, not only on the events themselves, but on the real life details of the ship and its day to day function. These people weren't recreating through some sort of fictional construct; they were recounting without artifice their world as they knew it. This is the stuff that those of us who are fascinated by the Titanic story really want to know.I kept thinking as I read this book that this would make a great stage production. There are several "characters" that stand out as exceptional roles. A great exchange takes place between a group of lifeboat passengers and a Quartermaster named Robert Hitchens. A passenger named Ella White makes a wonderful, indignant speech. Fifth Officer Harold Lowe makes a strong impression. Of course, the Duff Gordons are fun.Anyway, good reading. I recommend it. And a Titanic mystery: 4 explosions were testified to by survivors, but the experts say they could not have been caused by exploding boilers. So what was the cause?

I absolutely love this book! Very finely detailed compared to the one I purchased from the Titanic Historical Society, here in the U.S. IF you are an admirer of the Titanic, and wanted to learn the facts in their investigation, hetre in the U.S. Then as a matter of closure, this might be just what you need! Well worth the money! And, it doesn't weigh 3 pounds! Very well documented because my great grandmother known as the "Rose" , left me some heirlooms. And her written views!! Again, THANK YOU AMAZON!! This book was great for those that enjoy reading about the history of events. Written from the testimonies of the survivors of the sinking of the titanic it tells the tale of the fateful trip from the start to after all were rescued. Also includes excerpts of the findings from the trail that was held afterwards. A very interesting read and would recommend to all because it is the account of the actual passengers, employees and rescuers it is easy to read and does not over load you with actual fcts.

This book is an edited collection of the inquiries made after the Titanic sinking. Given the miss-information about the sinking circulating, this book a really good read. It clearly presents what really happened. Lots of good information about early shipboard radio stations and life aboard the ship.

My heart burst with joy on August 1 as I heard Michael Twitty interviewed on a public radio show. I have been blessed to follow his journey through the first Discomfort Tour and learn as he shared his knowledge through his blog at AfroCulinaria. But this book is so much more than what any one article, any one blog post, any one standing up for what is right moment can be.The Cooking Gene repositions the conversation about race in America through its food history. Slavery is an incredibly difficult subject to address, much less understand. How can people subject other people to unspeakable cruelty? One element that distinguished the Transatlantic Slave Trade from other types of slavery throughout time is that the enslavers actively stripped the enslaved people of their identities and connections to their homelands.But as Michael so adeptly realized through his interest in both history and food is that you can't strip away how people cook. So, the victims of the Transatlantic Slave Trade retained their cooking techniques and shared them with others. Over time their foodways became our foodways. But even though his enslaved ancestors couldn't pass down their cultural identities as my Ashkenazi Jewish ancestors could, they passed down their foodways to him along with their actual DNA.The Cooking Gene is a book to be cherished but also one to be digested. Thank you Michael for taking the journey as uncomfortable as it may have been at times. Discomfort has lead to a beautiful piece of art.

I just finished reading The Cooking Gene by Michael Twitty. This book is nothing short of a declaration of truth on so many levels. It is about Twitty's life and him coming into his own, about all the ancestors who contributed to his DNA, and about the cultural transfers of food that came with the arrival of our African ancestors to this country. Twitty gives a thorough breakdown of what foods Africans brought to country and what foods they incorporated into their cuisine from both Native-Americans and Europeans . He rightly pays tribute to all the African-American chefs who came before him and puts the spotlight on them which is where it should be in terms of Southern cooking. In an era where American politics is dividing people, The Cooking Gene gives the reader a glimpse of a better America where everyone can have a seat at the table of culinary history and more. I applaud him for speaking his own truth to power and in honoring his ancestors and mine in the process.

I ordered this after listening to an NPR interview with the author, on what turned out to be the day of its release. The book arrived the next day. What I have read so far is really interesting (I'm a non-fiction person who enjoys reading about history / people / culture, and also loves to cook). I was hoping for more photographs and recipes than there are (there are just a few pages of photos in the middle of the book, and recipes are intermittent throughout the text). It also would've been nice if a recipe index had been included at the front of the book (or even as subtext within the table of contents), hence the only 4 out of 5 stars. But overall I am enjoying the book a lot, and look forward to the rest of the read (as well as trying out the black eyed pea hummus, which sounds delicious, and as a vegetarian I appreciate it being included!).

The Cooking Gene is about food and about so much more than food. It is about history, and identity, and memory. It is about the complexity of the American present, about the hidden away memories in plain sight. Michael Twitty's poetic prose is mesmerizing; my copy arrived one day and I sat down with it, intending to skim. The cream of the text slowed me down and forced me to read one delicious paragraph after another. Hours later I had devoured the whole thing.This book is about holy healing work; it is about the memory in the kitchen. I recommend it without reservation.

I just started reading this book last night and fell into it pretty deeply. I could've kept going for a long time but had to stop because parts of it were making me hungry and I didn't want to finish it too quickly. This is a book to be savored. Twitty writes in gorgeous poetic prose that transports the reader to different historical moments and geographic spaces. I am not especially well versed in Southern history, and certainly not in its food histories, so I am learning a lot from this. The book is a unique blend of academic scholarship, food writing and memoir. Those are all categories that I enjoy anyway but I rarely see them combined into one work and elegantly at that. I highly recommend it.

I bought this in conjunction with the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide: Seville & Andalusia. They both work together beautifully. The DK book gives wonderful depth to the area and Steves' book gives a quick and lively look and great tips to specific areas and parts of Seville, Granada and Cordoba. And, he gives great tips to visiting surrounding areas. Both of these will be a great help to me as I have been in the northern part of Spain but not the South.

I use to love rick steves but this trip i felt like every recommended tapas bar was filled with american tourists, it really took away from experiencing the local life. I ended up skipping the recommendations and heading to places filled with locals. Still love the books to use as guides for touring museums etc and tricks in saving time.

I thought this would be helpful esp. the Southern Spain section but Steves skips over the Southern Coast and actually discourages spending any time in the area. the only stop recommended was the town of Narja which is nice but there are many interesting and fun areas on the coast from Malaga east to Almaria. Most of Europe vacations in this area, esp. Germans and Brits. Steves complains that they have ruined the area, which I find very snobbish on his part, since we are all tourist. Before tourist came here in flocks the whole area was tiny fishing villages. To be irritated by tourist is strange since he makes his living off tourism. The Southern coast is best visited after the extremely hot summer months when most people are not on vacation. If you like beach hopping you will love the area with more wilderness then high rises. Many nude beaches are clearly posted, very low key and not creepy. You won't find much English spoken here and after a while you really look forward to chatting with Brits on holiday who are very light hearted and friendly.My Spanish host look though the book and was miffed at how Steves dismisses the whole area. If you dislike the beach then you certainly will find helpful info. about Sevilla and Granada, which are must see cities, but if you have the time try getting to the coast for beach hopping, Cava drinking and seafood. Very relaxing away from the bustle of the cities.

GET THIS E-BOOK!!! I debated whether it would be worth the money before I took a big month-long trip to Spain this past October/November 2009. I was not disappointed! The most useful feature (there are tons) in the Snapshot city guide e-books are the self-guided tours and walks. There are excursion tips, updated cost, hours, locations, phone numbers, maps, self-guided walking tours in the city...Seriously, it's a no-brainer. Get this e-book. Even if you never use it. For so little money, you can save yourself a world full of headaches. He also points out cool things to see in the city that aren't in other tour books, cool facts and history, and he gives invaluable tips of the good places to go for everything (food, entertainment, museums, neighborhoods, etc). Also, the local free tourist maps they give you are usually anemic by way of detailed, accurate information. Having this little tool as a backup is critical when you may not have time to hunt down bigger books and maps. It also gives you info about surrounding cities you may like to visit, as well as tips on language, money, phoning...Plus, it fits in your pocket (I used it on my iPhone with the Kindle reader). You don't look like a tourist dork reading your iPhone, like you do lugging around maps and books. You look way cooler... I used this guide for Sevilla, Cordoba (a HUGE help since there wasn't alot of helpful city info I could easily locate (tours, etc)). I self navigated thru La Mezquita, and saved a ton of money on formal audio and tour guides (the self-guided tour in the e-book is VERY thorough and comprehensive). It also give you tips to Granada & Gibraltar (I ran out of time to see them). Rick Steves knows how to make a city come alive! You will get your money's worth 10 fold.

Information on cities and towns that covered in this book is interesting, valuable, and useful. But if you are going to visit Malaga, Cadiz or both, you will find nothing in this book. Meantime Malaga has many places to visit like the Castle of Gibralfaro the Alcazaba, and Museo Picasso. Cadiz also has many interesting buildings and one of the most beautiful beaches in the world - La Playa de la Caleta.Same time the book covers Morocco and Tangier that are not located in Southern Spain.

Stevens in this little book is concentrating on the most touristed coastal areas on Basque (northern Spain). Not much on the more mountainess smaller villages.

I am a huge Rick Steves Fan. However I was disappointed that this edition did not include several Spanish cities I am visting including Malaga and Ibiza.I would never say I don't love Rick Steves, but this book does have a huge oversight. To defend it a bit, I found out that the entire Spain book also omits Malaga and Ibiza... so since this is a snapshot of the main book, I guess the real fault lies with Rick Steves Spain.I hate cheating on Rick with other travel guides, but Lonely Planet has my purchase for this trip :(sorry Rick!

I had been introduced to another book by this author, "The Sovernity of God" which Ireally liked. This book, "Knowing God" turned out to be very meaningful to me.Packer speaks directly to the reader asking and answering questions in a verycommunicative style. This is a book I will re-read over and over, and I purchasedextras for friends.After I finished reading it I had an "Aha moment". I recalled writing a letter to mymuch older brother whose health was failing fast. We had never been close ashe had estranged himself from the entire family for his entire life. I wrote that Iwas sorry that we had not had a relationship, and that I was sorry that I had notknown him better.And THAT is the message at the center of this book.... that knowing God has toconsist of more than knowledge of His Word, scrliptual verses from the Bible andfollowing the Ten Commandments. To know God, I learned, is to have a real,vibrant and personal emotional relationship with Him; one that requires love,trust, obedience, discipline, forgiveness, guidance, respect, honor and glory!A real relationship.I also really like how Packer descri bes and explains what it means to "be achild of God", what it means to be adopted into God's family, to call HimFather and Jesus Christ brother.Whether you are a long-time follower or a new born-again Christian I thinkthis will be a valuable book that will expand your understanding andappreciation of how precious your relationship with God is.

Does the book, Knowing God, by James I. Packer, deserve the status it has received as being a "classic"?Absolutely!!! You will not for a moment regret reading Packer's reflections on the attributes of God, the work of Christ on the Cross, and the living of the Christian life. Though I have a few quibbles about Packer's criticism of the use of icons and images in worship, his digs at Keswick consecration and surrender teaching, and his skepticism over the Charismatic reliance on hearing God. My concerns are minor compared to the great worth of Packer's thoughts on God in his greatness, the Son in his finished work, and the Holy Spirit in his enabling power. Be ready to grow spiritually as Packer walks you into a deeper and more profound understanding of God's Word. *Knowing God* is a wonderfully written book about God himself-- someone we need to know personally and intimately. I can't believe that it took me twenty-five years to finally take the time to read it.

I bought this book disregarding what others have said about this book, and wanting to find about this book myself. I, now, agree with many, many others who claim this book has changed their lives. I don't think I have ever read a book that just made me stop in the middle of the page and just sob and pray to God.Being a Christian my whole life and attending Bible studies and summer camps, I have been just knowing about God rather than knowing God. But Packer successfully helped me to know God by revealing how glorious and majestic He is and how He sent His son to die for me in order for me to be adopted into His family. I think my favorite part of this book was his first section (I know the Lord; chapter 1-6), The Majesty of God (chapter 8), God only Wise (Chapter 9), God's Wisdom and Ours (Chapter 10), God the Judge (Chapter 14), The Wrath of God (Chapter 15), Goodness and Severity (Chapter 16), and the last section (If God be for us; chapter 18-22).I would highly recommend this book to any Christian as Packer unfolds the characters of God but, not only that, he helps you wanting to know God more than when you picked up his book.

I agree with R. C. Sproul: “Few writings deserve to be called 'Christian classics' but this is surely one of them. With the heart of a pastor, the understanding of a theologian and the passion of a prophet, J. I. Packer brings the reader face to face with the living God.”

In my opinion the best book I've read other than the Bible. It will really enrich your life in the most essential ways--the ways that matter because they are eternal but affect everyday life. If you can drop your defenses and shift your trust completely to Christ, you will be rewarded in profound ways that Packer covers amazingly in this book.

I benefited greatly in Packer's presentation of the attributes of God and his presentation of my need to have my own sin dealt with through the Gospel. I found his characterization of God's holiness, mercy, and grace to be balanced and not skewed to make God somehow more palatable. When leading a group through this book, I was surprised at how many people took issue with some of Packer's assertions related to various topics. (for instance the chapter on the second commandment about not making an idol) . . . what I found to be invariably true is that when people took issue, it was because they had created an image of God that was not in alignment with the biblical presentation being made by Packer - and that in the majority of these cases when people re-examined their imagined god, they found him to fall short of the God presented within this book and corrected their understanding of God through Packer's gracious and instructional writing. Highly recommend.

This is a great discussion about God. It makes you think about aspects of Christianity you might not have paid attention to. And, then there are things that you need clarification about. Jack Nicklaus was supposed to have started each tour season retraining starting with the grip. He wanted to be sure he didn't pick up any bad habits. It is good to "relearn" about Christ periodically to be sure we haven't fallen into a misunderstanding. Rereading the Bible is paramount, but books like Knowing God are also great opportunities to recheck what we think we know.

I think a new version and an update of this book will do it justice

Stats are not perfect, distorted for many majors by graduate work, but much better than not having the data. Recommend for parents and prospective college students thinking about what to study - liberal arts may not be as good a choice as you think!

This book was helpful for my son to understand how these decisions affect real life. He is not a reader but I have found him looking through the book several times when he has questions.
