I've been wanting this book ever since I was in high school. I was not disappointed. It is true that it is written in Arnold's language and with his insight. I read it with his accent for fun. It has great suggestions and workouts for every muscle. The book is divided up into 5 books, each with there own chapters.There is quite a bit of text and pictures, so if you are visual, prefer reading, or like both you won't be disappointed. Book 1: Introduction to Bodybuilding, Book 2: Training Programs, Book 3: Body Part Exercises, Book 4: Competition, Book 5: Health, Nutrition, and Diet. I took this book with me overseas while Deployed in Afghanistan. It was great to read about the basics, and understand what makes the body grow. Till this day I still read the book, and look to it for guidance. When hitting a wall, hitting a plateau, healing an injury, or just overall motivation; I read this book. Its a must read for men or woman who take pride in their body.

Provides some standard information for readers with little to no knowledge of weightlifting. Unecessarilu large and a little comvoluted at times for the sake of making the book larger than it needed to be. Recieved the book in damaged condition along the spine despite buying "as new". Pages along the center are poorly seamed/glued to the point where they're falling out.Over this book I'd recommend Frederic Delavier's Strength Training and Anatomy volume two. It condenses alot of the principle from the Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding into a well written, easily interpretable book with detailed anatomical illustrations that highlight what muscles are trained with what exercises and how to train them. It also has program recommendations for beginners, intermidiate, and advanced lifters that I still use as a base templet for my own training to this day. A year and change after purchasing this book. Easily the better book on the topic. Mark Ripptoe's "Starting Strength" may also be worth a read for those focused squarely on powerlifting.

I loved this book. Arnold's enthusiasm for bodybuilding is infectious and it is full of so many great anecdotes about his personal experiences while competing in the field. Filled with great pictures of how to do each exercise and has some very excellent sample workout schedules that I've followed and gotten great results with in the just the few months that I've been following them. Just leafing through this book makes you want to go out and lift more!My only criticism is that he only has a single, very short chapter dedicated female competitive bodybuilders. And unlike the gobs and gobs of photos of huge male bodybuilders interspersed throughout the book, he doesn't even include any photos of these women! Come on, Arnold! I see tons of women at the gym, some very serious about weightlifting, and by not making them feel included in this book, you're probably missing out on many potential purchasers of this book.

I used to lift when I was younger, I always enjoyed it, and wanted to start again. I felt like I needed information about, well, everything, from nutrition to basic lifting exercises. This book has it all. Very informative for beginners to the experienced competing bodybuilder. Well illustrated with pictures and drawings. I like that it's not an Arnold autobiography, of course he includes personal stories, but they are all related to bodybuidling. He's not all "Me me me" there are plenty of examples and praise for other competitors.I also like his attitude that "muscles are muscles, it doesn't matter if they are on a a male or female." Being a woman, that's one of the reasons why I bought this book. And let's be honest, whether you like Schwarzenegger or not, he clearly knows - and is passionate about - this subject. I highly recommend this book.

I bought this as a gift to my husband because as a teen he admired Arnold as a bodybuilder. I thought it would be a fun gift, somewhat as a joke, just to jog old memories. However, this book is packed with basic tenants that give such great information in all facets of bodybuilding. Applying these principles to work out programs is all you need. There is no need to reinvent the wheel- this book is great for everyone!

I was a programmer when the VT100 terminal and the command line were king and queen. I could write some mean Pascal or FORTRAN. I cut my teeth on BASIC, and taught myself a little C. But then I turned away from programming, and in the ensuing decade, the programming world changed. I bought this book to catch up with the changes. Boy, have things changed -- for example, VB lets you display database records by painting a few controls and typing one line of code. And they call this programming?Halvorson's book guides you through the standard-bearer of programming's current state. Halvorson concisely explains concepts, then walks you through examples that mostly follow this pattern: Create the interface, type in the following code, and run it. To learn from this book, you must pay special attention to the code Halvorson gives you. Read each line and consider the role it plays. If you omit this analysis, you will learn and retain little.When you finish this book, you will have been exposed to the breadth of Visual Basic and will know what kinds of things are available to you. But I have a sneaking suspicion that when you start building your own VB applications, you'll be back at Amazon.com buying a solid VB reference.

Mr. Halvorson is obviously very well educated in Visual Basic and it shows through his teachings. There's enough in this book to please a reader of any ability level. The first 7 chapters are a superb introduction to not only Visual Basic but also computer programming in general by covering all the bases. As you go farther, the book begins to go deeper and deeper into some hardcore VB capabilities like advanced database programming, Dynamic HTML design and using the Windows API. I will admit that very few, if any, of these rapidly expanding features are covered in full length but there is certainly enough in here to get you cracking at some code.The only problem I had with this book (and my reason for giving it 4 stars) is the layout of the chapters in the middle of the book which I feel is wrong. It begins discussing multiple forms, printer communication and special effects before it even mentions subroutines, arrays, procedures and modules which are all primary components of computer programming. These topics are not just nice VB features but rather crucial areas of any language and thus I feel they were misplaced. I reccomend that those of you who are new to programming read those chapters first and then go back to chapters 8 and 9.Overall, this is a great tutorial and excellent resource for any VB developer. If you want the best guide available, buy Visual Basic 6.0 Step by Step by Michael Halvorson right now. You will not be disappointed.

Coming from a C++ background, I was completely lost when I started out using the VB MOC "MCSD Training Kit". "Step-by-Step" filled in the gap nicely. You need no prior experience with VB to start using this book.The layout of the book approaches excellence. I would summarize its design as "do first, then learn the details". This approach maps well with how humans learn best - thru mimicking first, then rational thought.Each lesson in the book is self-contained and easy to follow. Lessons 1 thru 7 are "mandatory" after that, you could really just pick and choose what you want to learn about. The code examples in the book are just the right amount - not too little, not too much. The accompanying CD contains all the sources and supporting files the course material requires.One or two of the lessons require Word and Excel. One lesson requires Outlook. A small beef is that the book did not mention that it had to be full blown Outlook and not Outlook Express.While it not for the experienced VB programmer, it is invaluable for programmers new to VB. Overall, an excellent pre-MOC source to learn the basics of VB.

I came to this book as a very advanced user of Word, Excel & Powerpoint for financial businesses, but with no programming experience. This book is so easy to follow, so encouraging, that I cannot imagine anyone not doing some good work after using it. After just doing the first 2 exercises, I started clicking around in VBA and already created some very useful stuff for my employer that looks impressive but was really a snap to do. Now I'm going through the whole book step by step and it's all so doable! He also talks about error handlers in a way that anyone using VB should regard. In that I mean I've used quite a few custom VB & VBA templates & programs written by others with some annoying quirks that I now see could have been easily avoided, with a little attention. Maybe they should've glanced at this book.

This book provides some useful navigation information for new vb6 user. The book was easy to read. First 11 chapters were written in a way to encourage learning and allow reader to try hands on examples. But later chapters Author seems to have given up teaching and just throw the application examples to reader and just discussed the application example without opportunity for hands on by reader. Feel like an incomplete project. For beginner, I think it still a book that would be useful book to have.

Bought this for my son. Must have been good, helped him get the job he applied for!

this should be subtitled "how to combine mixes". there should also be a warning about all the specific brands they promote, just a cursory run through referred to six specific brands - and even more generic "mixes". the recipes would have to be converted for a real kitchen before I could even try them.

If you would like to know the history of dutch ovens, you may find this book interesting, but the information is ancient and few recipes are included. I do not recommend purchasing this book.

More a history book then a cookbook. Recipes are buried in stories of how it was developed and used through the ages.

I was surprised how it was written more like a biography on Dutch Oven cooking in J. Wayne Fears life. The receipes were good but not enough of them. I wanted him to get to the point so it seems I skipped around a lot!

If Grandma could have just one of her many pots and pans, that one would have to be one of her Dutch Ovens. (Which one might be a harder choice.) Sure, you can use the "indoor" sort on your stove or in your oven and Grandma often does, especially for baking bread, but there is nothing in this world like food cooked over a camp fire (Grandma loves to cook over a campfire!) and the easiest way to turn out a professional meal, worthy of the very best chuck wagon cook is with one or more Dutch Ovens.In The Complete Book Of Dutch Oven Cooking Wayne Fears provides rank beginner and old hand alike an excellent run down of everything you need to know to start or improve your campfire cookery. If you are looking for history of dutch oven cooking and how to cook then the book is ok. I was looking for more outdoor recipes so I was a little disappointed.

Not sure what I expected. Although, I was disappointed my the number of recipes in the book I felt there could be more.. there was a lot of info about Dutch ovens and the condition of the book was as promised.

I have to confess that I have not read the book completely but as I was skimming through it before giving it to my kids I came across a couple things that the book could have done without. The first has to do with a section on palm reading. While most people will see this as just a game and nothing to make a big deal, I have issue with this. It dabbles with the occult which is dangerous. I grew up in a country where the spirit world was very real- not something to be played with. Most in the Western world may scoff at this but there are far too many things out there that could have been added instead of this. The other thing that I had issue with was under games for a sleep over. There was a "game" to summon the spirit of Bloody Mary. Once again, something that in my opinion dabbles too close to the occult. Since I am pointing out things that some may want to know about before purchasing- there is also a section on how to tell a ghost story. This is something that you make up, so I don't find quite so controversial; although it would not be missing anything if it was left out. I gave this book 4 stars because overall from what I saw I thought the book was fun and full of good tidbits but wanted to point out some things so that others are not caught completely off guard if they have issues with these things being in a book for children.

I bought this book for a friend's daughter several years ago, and then a few years ago, I bought it for my granddaughter for her 9th birthday. She didn't discover a love of reading until she received this book. She is 11 now, and still keeps it by her bedside. It's filled with useful and fun information. I just purchased another one for my second granddaughter, and plan to give it to her for her 7th birthday.

This book is great! Its like a scout book for girls. Tons of useful advice and instructions to do a wide variety of things. As a parent I wish I had this book when I was little. It is fun to read through together and work on projects together!

So I got this for my 8 year old niece and I'm not sure it is a gift I'd give her this early. Some of the topics they over are: Writing Letters, Modern Women Leaders, and Negotiating a Salary (for babysitting etc). But some topics are cute for her to learn. I say this book may need to come with parental guidance or at least be available for Q&A that might need to come with it.I got my brother the Daring book for boys when he was 15 and it was appropriate I think.

Got this for our daughter because she was jealous of my son's copy of "The Dangerous Book for Boys". She loves it! It covers so many different topics and is actually a really fun book to leave out for display. The cover is bright and it's well put together so we leave it on the coffee table. My daughter shows it off to people and tells them about what she's learned.

I bought this for my 10 year old daughter for Christmas and she absolutely loves it! She hasn't put it down since yesterday!

This is a very cute book with a lot of good information and activities in it. It has a lot of "old school" things that "kids these days" don't get exposed to.

We have the first book and just had to have the second! It doesn't disappoint! My girls use things they have learned in here on a daily basis! I truly wish I had these books when I was growing up, they are fantastic!

In a Barn in New England, Joseph Monniger recounts his family's first year living in and completing renovations of a large barn in Warren, New Hampshire. In addition to details of the renovation, Monniger also paints a picture of the simple things in life that too many today are too hurried and too harried to notice, much less enjoy, whether it's flying a kite with an eight-year-old in a summer meadow, entertaining family and friends at Thanksgiving dinner or stopping for a moment while painting a wall to notice the moon's reflection in the dog's water bowl. The book also calls to our attention the worrisome fact that approximately 1,000 barns disappear from the North American landscape each year.

Lovely, Lovely, book. I could not put it down and looked forward to my nightly reading. In some parts it strayed off from the actual life in the barn what those parts were okay to read about.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it. He does a good job describing the adventures of living in a converted barn.

Monninger has a very engaging way of writing and this book like his others is compelling to read to see what happens next. My favorite book of his is Eternal on the Water.

I love everything he writes!

It's a wonderful book, well written and makes you feel good about life! I will now buy more books from this author.

This book documents the first year of living as a family for Monninger, his partner, and his partner's son. The book begins with the first day Monninger and his partner went to look at the barn that would become their home together and follows them for one year as they establish their new life as one family in their home in the barn. Monninger describes how each person adapted to living in the 6000 square foot living area inside the barn, how they remodeled some rooms, added heating stoves, and rebuilt the kitchen. It tells how they melded their furniture together, choosing one person's or another's best pieces, and purchased some new items specifically for the new space. After a summer of settling in, the barn finally began to make the transition into feeling like a home when extended family came to visit for the holidays.The title and cover photo of the book may be a little misleading- -this is definitely not a barn story. Although Monninger relates in passing some of the history of the barn, this isn't an ode to country traditions or barn lore. It is much more a story of a family, of taking unrelated individuals, each with prior lives involving other relationships, and constructing a new unity together. Monninger describes how he and his partner are quite satisfied to construct their family without a marriage ceremony. He also tells us how close he feels to his partner's son, and how much this relationship means to him. In reading Monninger's story however, I can't help but wonder if the young boy is as contented with his parents' unmarried state as they are. How secure can he feel in his relationship with his would-be stepfather if his mother and this man are unwilling to formalize their commitment? It may be perfectly acceptable for two adults to freely establish a home together without the benefit of marriage, but when children are involved, the story becomes much more complicated, and their interests should be seen to first. Monninger is a gifted writer and tells a magical story of intentional family creation in this book, but it's not clear from this tale that he has fully taken responsibility for all he has set in motion.

I bought this book several years ago from the bookstore at Winterthur Gardens and Galleries, the Du Pont estate, in Wilmington, Delaware. I have read, and re-read, this book more times than I care to remember, which is more than I can say for some of the best-selling gardening or nature books in my library.Some people write about nature with authority, some with wonder, and others still with love. Monninger does all this and more. His tone is reminscent of Wordsworth who was detached observer of nature and smitten lover all at once. Contrast Wordsworth with Shelley's awe-struck and hushed ruminations on nature, and you will know at once what I mean and, perhaps, better identify Monninger's unique voice as a nature writer.But this is more than a book about nature outside us. It is also about the ecology of relationships - between a man and his dog, a man and his wife, and a man and his son, and, not least, about their collective relationships with one another as they settle into their lovely home, a barn, in New Hampshire. The self-help books are full of techniques about making marriages and child-rearing work. I couldn't help thinking, after reading this book, that perhaps the secret of a rich and stable family life is really quite simple: one needs two things: a shared vision of the life the family wants and then the shared burden of working towards it. So, even when there are nice paychecks, a handsome roof overhead, and a kitchen bursting with all the bounties of food, a family can still fail, except not really. Families do not fail. They just stop trying to work together. When I need to reawaken to this simple, yet profound truth, I read Monninger again and invariably, I am rewarded with a new raft of insights on love, family and nature.

Jackie MacMullan has been a likable and well-respected sportswriter for many years, and considering her unique closeness to the NBA (and Boston sports in particular), I anticipated that this would be a definitive work on the often-celebrated Bird/Magic dynamic - a magnum opus if you will. Instead, I found it a fairly disorganized and pedestrian rehash of the same information that we already knew. I mean, it wasn't bad...it was very readable, but I can't think of anything that really distinguished it from the other basketball books I've read. At the end of the day, I don't think it's that the information or research was bad, it's really the lack of an elegant or entertaining writing style that limited this book. In contrast, Dan Shaughnessy's brand of cynical humor and storytelling is what made his first "Curse of the Bambino" such an entertaining read (as opposed to his follow-up "Reversing the Curse", in my opinion. The writing style is what makes the sports book - not the information. Perhaps that is why writing this type of book must be a great challenge for somebody like MacMullan - her likability is part of her identity (and brand), and that can be constraining when writing about people who engage you on that basis. Shaughnessy obviously does not operate within those constraints...

Plowed brought this book in a weekend. So many memories, passages to highlight, instances where I could remember exactly where I was. The book essentially covers 1979-2009. My life 1976-current day. So pretty fascinating to relive, and unique to me, the Pacers years w Bird the coach and executive. While the players rivalry in the 80s will highlight any Celtics or Laker fan experience, for this Pacer fan 1997-2005 were some of the best years of my life.Chapter 9 is incredibly moving covering Magic’s HIV announcement in 1991. As a 15 year old that didn’t like the Lakers, I really didn’t get the magnitude. The author captures this period vividly,in amazing detail, with remarkable behind the scenes accounts. Golly, I read that Chapter while walking on a treadmill at the gym, and had the damnedest time fighting back the tears.

Book definitely not an airball. Delivers and is not just an outsiders view. It's straight from the mouths of two of the greatest ever and the men who played against them. I don't know of any two other athletes that brought out the best in each other like Magic and Bird did. And it should be a blueprint on how the great ones should respect and treat each other: try to beat each other's brains out on the court, respect and emulate character off the court.

Really I had only modest expectations when I purchased this book as one of the Kindle daily deals. I've read many sports books on topics that are forced. Bird and Magic together? I really had no idea that they were so close. I learned through this book that their bond is legitimate and that made for a great book. The author was excellent and kept the story going. If you are like me and remember the NCAA championship battle between the two and the ensuing NBA finals meetings then I guarantee you will enjoy this book.

"When The Game Was Ours" provides an intimate look into the evolution of the relationship between Larry Bird and Earvin "Magic" Johnson. The book does a great job telling the story of how two men became bitter rivals and eventually close friends. I was relatively young when both men began their careers and wasn't privy to the impact they had on the NBA as a whole, so I especially enjoyed learning about the history of the NBA and how these two men changed it forever. The book is a very easy read and manages to balance the historical aspect with additional insights into both Bird and Magic's relationships with their teammates as well. Unfortunately the latter gets a bit too gossip column for me, and detracts from the overall quality of the book. My only other complaint would be the amount of missing time the book has, for example, while the book does go into detail about Magic's Hall of Fame induction ceremony, it leaves out Larry's entirely. All in all I really enjoyed the book and recommend it for fans of either man, their teams, or the NBA in general.

I love basketball and love Bird and Magic specifically. This book does a great job of telling the story about the NBA as a whole but through the lens of two of the men that elevated the game to new heights. It's an excellent read for anyone that loves basketball.

Fun read. I would suggest this book to anyone that is a fan of the NBA and its history, a fan of either of the title superstars, or anyone that enjoys biogrpahies.The stories and careers are woven together seamlessly and are entertaining. The Boston author does a fair job of representing each athlete equally and there is no detectable "East Coast Bias"Fun book that explores the careers of each athlete and offers insights into how they helped grow the game and how their legends' grew along side one another- how they were rivals and friends at the same time.

Excellent book, good stories about Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. I learned things about them both, that I simply didn't know. At the time this story was happening I lived in Indiana and was following Larry Bird at Indiana State. I loved the small school story, being from Indiana, it hit home. I was raised in a small town called Fortville, "Fortville Demons", this would be in the 50's, the population was about 2000, counting the cats & dogs. So, for me it was a great book, ending in the State Championship. Fun to read!
